We compared use of second language or L2 (i.e., English) listening and speaking strategies at the start and end of a 5-week English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programme at a UK university. This is one of the first studies to use <em>speaker stance analysis<\/em> (i.e., analysis of the way people perceive themselves as speakers and listeners, for example, how prepared they are to actively communicate with another person) in studying L2 academic communication.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/2022\/01\/15\/news-a-co-authored-research-article-by-dr-anna-tsakalaki-lecturer-in-education-university-of-reading-published-in-journal-of-english-for-academic-purposes\/anna_paper\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3557\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3557 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2022\/01\/anna_paper.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"551\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2022\/01\/anna_paper.png 709w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2022\/01\/anna_paper-300x233.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Factor analysis revealed a subtle but clear shift towards <em>more other-oriented stance<\/em> in both the listening and speaking strategies the students used before and at the end of the course, although with much individual variation. (The <em>more other-oriented stance<\/em> is when the other person becomes the centre of attention during communication \u2013 a direct contrast to the <em>self-oriented<\/em> stance when oneself is at the centre of attention.)<\/p>\n<p>Based on our findings, we argue that even short-term EAP courses can have valuable potential in boosting oral language strategies and skills, particularly in listening, which are needed for preparedness by students to learn from lecturers and each other when joining their course.<\/p>\n<div data-event-added=\"1\">The authors will discuss their paper in a free talk organised by the University of Reading&#8217;s Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism (CeLM) on <span class=\"_2W25ije4SzSCNnPMgASC2u\" role=\"link\" data-markjs=\"true\">17th March 2022<\/span> at 15:30.
