Dr. Billy Wong<\/a><\/strong> (Associate Professor in Widening Participation, University of Reading) was an invited speaker at the University of Exeter\u2019s inaugural \u2018Transformative Education Seminar Series\u2019 (1st February 2022).<\/p>\n

Dr Wong\u2019s presentation was entitled, \u2018Using qualitative research to understand awarding gaps\u2019, where he talked about the importance of qualitative data in our understanding of the awarding gaps in higher education. He discussed two of his recent projects, \u2018Student Experiences in STEM\u2019 (SESTEM<\/a><\/strong>, funded by the University of Reading) and \u2018Supporting the Identity Development of Underrepresented Student\u2019 (SIDUS<\/a><\/strong>, funded by Imperial College London).<\/p>\n

Billy was appointed as University of Exeter\u2019s first ever Principal External Examiner<\/a><\/strong>, providing external assurance and scrutiny for their university\u2019s degree outcomes and annual Degree Outcomes Statement<\/a><\/strong>, which includes reporting on degree awarding gaps and the work to address them. The role began in November 2021, and will last for three academic years.<\/p>\n
