The article, titled <em>\u2018Biology is easy, physics is hard\u2019: Student perceptions of the ideal and the typical student across STEM higher education\u2019<\/em>, is published in the journal, <em>International Studies in Sociology of Education<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3985 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2022\/10\/billy_biology_abstract.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"510\" height=\"556\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The paper draws on 89 interviews with undergraduates Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degrees and presents their descriptions of the ideal as well as the typical student within their disciplines. The study found a social hierarchy within STEM degrees where biology was perceived as the easier STEM subject, whilst harder subjects such engineering, mathematics and physics were constructed as masculine.
