{"id":4051,"date":"2022-12-07T17:51:58","date_gmt":"2022-12-07T17:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/?p=4051"},"modified":"2022-12-07T18:04:22","modified_gmt":"2022-12-07T18:04:22","slug":"news-professor-suzanne-graham-and-dr-anthony-zhang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/2022\/12\/07\/news-professor-suzanne-graham-and-dr-anthony-zhang\/","title":{"rendered":"NEWS \u2013 Professor Suzanne Graham and Dr. Anthony Zhang \u2013 both of the University of Reading\u2019s Institute of Education \u2013 are part of a new ESRC-funded research project exploring digital development for primary foreign language teachers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\" theme-editor\">\n<p><strong>The press release below is prepared by the University of Reading&#8217;s Press Office, and is also available <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/news\/2022\/Research-News\/Primary-foreign-language-teachers-to-get-digital-development\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Reading, in partnership with the University of Southampton, will be working on a research project over three years to improve the language and teaching skills of primary educators.<\/p>\n<p>One of Reading\u2019s researchers on the project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/education\/staff\/suzanne-graham\"><strong>Professor Suzanne Graham<\/strong><\/a> said:<em> \u201cIn a post-lockdown world, we want to take advantage of the digital connectivity that was created during that time and integrate it into professional development for primary school language teachers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Digital Empowerment in Language Teaching\u2019 project will investigate the potential for digital technology to improve teachers\u2019 knowledge of foreign languages, enhance their classroom skills, and support them to promote their learners\u2019 language and literacy skills.<\/p>\n<p>A Digital Professional Development programme is being established and tested in England and Scotland. The plan is to roll it out to all four nations, as a scaled-up, peer-supported version of the programme.<\/p>\n<p>It will also be important to establish the mechanisms through which any changes for teachers and learners happen. The project also aims to do this.<\/p>\n<p>Led by Dr Alison Porter (Southampton), the project team also includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/education\/staff\/pengchong-anthony-zhang\"><strong>Dr Pengchong Anthony Zhang<\/strong><\/a> from the University of Reading.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4052 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2022\/12\/PrimarySchoolChildren-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"249\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), and forms part of the ESRC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukri.org\/news\/research-on-teachers-and-technology-for-teaching-and-learning\/?utm_source=Twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=Orlo\"><strong>Education Research Programme<\/strong><\/a>. The programme aims to explore new approaches to attracting and developing teachers, and the use of technology for teaching and learning.
