Idea for the book came from the inaugural meeting of the Science Identities special interest group (SIG) at the European Science Education Research Association (ESERA) annual conference in Dublin, Ireland, back in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4143 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2023\/01\/Book-cover-658x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"381\" height=\"589\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4144 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2023\/01\/Chapter-cover-969x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"386\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2023\/01\/Chapter-cover-969x1024.jpg 969w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2023\/01\/Chapter-cover-284x300.jpg 284w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2023\/01\/Chapter-cover-768x811.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2023\/01\/Chapter-cover.jpg 1174w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 386px) 100vw, 386px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In his chapter, Dr. Wong explores the concept of science identity as a <em>symbolic exchange<\/em>, focusing on how decisions and choice of consumptions are bounded up with status and power. The chapter draws on sociological theories of social reproduction and highlights the added value of studying science for school students, especially in physics and amongst high achievers.
