It has advanced the design and use of reliable metrics upon which climate policies are based and monitored across the globe.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the fight against climate change, understanding the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment is crucial. International climate treaties use metrics to compare the impact of emissions of different greenhouse gases. <strong>Professor Keith Shine<\/strong> has played a leading role in the calculation of radiative efficiency (RE) values for many such gases \u2013 a metric which feeds into broader assessments of the climate-changing potential of emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Radiative efficiency is the measure of a gas\u2019s effectiveness at trapping heat in Earth\u2019s atmosphere. Shine\u2019s group was the first to publish RE calculations for nitrogen trifluoride (NF<sub>3<\/sub>), which is widely used in the electronics industry. Its inclusion in a 2007 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) enabled NF<sub>3<\/sub> to be added to the list of gases whose emissions were restricted under United Nations\u2019 agreements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Professor Shine<\/strong> and <strong>Professor Bill Collins<\/strong> have played a major role in improving consistency in the calculation and reporting of emission metrics \u2013 contributing to an expanded dataset of over 200 greenhouse gases in IPCC\u2019s 2014 report. The provision of reliable metrics for the impact of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) \u2013 used in air-conditioning units and refrigeration \u2013 has galvanised international efforts to reduce their impact. For instance, Reading\u2019s work enabled legislators and manufacturers to identify HFCs with lower climate impact for use in air-conditioning units.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond RE, Reading has contributed to the debate on the design and choice of metrics upon which to base climate policy.
