{"id":608,"date":"2021-01-12T15:56:36","date_gmt":"2021-01-12T15:56:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/engagement-and-impact\/?p=608"},"modified":"2025-03-25T11:50:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T11:50:48","slug":"pioneering-prebiotics-for-improved-gut-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/engagement-and-impact\/pioneering-prebiotics-for-improved-gut-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Pioneering prebiotics for improved gut health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<em><strong>Reading food scientists have made great strides in our understanding of prebiotics \u2013 fuel for the \u2018good\u2019 bacteria in our guts \u2013 shaping health policy and benefiting the health of consumers worldwide.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Most people have suffered with digestive problems at some point, and research shows that a shortage of \u2018good\u2019 bacteria in the gut may be partly to blame. For two decades, <strong>Professor Glen Gibson<\/strong> has led research on prebiotics \u2013 fuel for our bodies\u2019 beneficial bacteria.<\/p>\n<p>Pioneering work by the team, including over 50 studies involving the likes of food manufacturers Nestle, Clasado and Kellogg\u2019s, has led to the development of BiMuno, a prebiotic product for treating traveller\u2019s diarrhoea.<\/p>\n<p>BiMuno is a non-digestible carbohydrate which acts as a prebiotic. After being eaten, it passes unchanged to the large intestine, where it is an energy source for beneficial bacteria, specifically boosting numbers of a type called colonic bifidobacteria.<\/p>\n<p>Now an established prebiotic product used by consumers worldwide, BiMuno sales were worth \u00a36.3 million between 2014 and 2019 and it counts among its consumers the elite athletes in Team GB, who used it to protect against tummy bugs during the Rio 2016 Olympics. Spin-off prebiotic products made by other companies incorporating BiMuno now help relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and other gut disorders for consumers worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunities presented by prebiotics for improving human health and wellbeing has not escaped the attention of policymakers.
