{"id":737,"date":"2019-07-12T11:03:39","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T10:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/35.193.178.118\/?page_id=737"},"modified":"2019-07-30T12:15:05","modified_gmt":"2019-07-30T11:15:05","slug":"evaluating-error-correlation-pt-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/fiduceo\/archive\/tutorials\/evaluating-error-correlation\/evaluating-error-correlation-pt-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Evaluating error correlation"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Type A methods for evaluating error correlation<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The standard approach for evaluating any form of correlation by statistical means is to calculate the Pearson correlation coefficient using the following expression:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"wp-block-katex-display-block katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"true\">r\\left( {x,y} \\right) = \\frac{1}{n} \\sum \\limits_{i = 1}^n \\left( {\\frac{{{x_i} &#8211; \\bar x}}{{{S_x}}}} \\right)\\left( {\\frac{{{y_i} &#8211; \\bar y}}{{{S_y}}}} \\right)<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>where:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><span class=\"katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"false\">r\\left( {x,y} \\right)<\/span>\u00a0is the Pearson correlation coefficient (see any standard statistics textbook for more information)<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"false\"> {x_i} <\/span> \u00a0and <span class=\"katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"false\"> {y_i} <\/span> \u00a0are single samples<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"false\"> \\bar x <\/span> \u00a0and <span class=\"katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"false\"> \\bar y <\/span> \u00a0are the sample means<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"false\"> {S_x} <\/span> \u00a0and <span class=\"katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"false\"> {S_y} <\/span> \u00a0are the standard deviations of the two samples<\/li>\r\n<li><span class=\"katex-eq\" data-katex-display=\"false\"> n <\/span> \u00a0is the sample size<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Error correlation can sometimes be determined using this equation. However, care must be taken to ensure that we are really working out the error correlation and not just a correlation due to physical or geophysical processes. This means somehow distinguishing the error from the value, and this is only realistically possible if there is a way of independently estimating the error. Often this is not possible, meaning that we must use a Type B method of error correlation evaluation.
