Timing of introduction of floating debris to a flood may be controlled by the exceedance of critical thresholds for debris entrainment via flotation or river bank and hillslope failure.\u00a0 During the September 2008\u00a0 Coquet River woody debris was entrained and transported during the \u00a0flood peak and waning stage suggesting the operation of thresholds for entrainment at higher discharges (Fig. 2). Note that debris mantles fence lines providing much greater resistance to waning stage flood flows than on rising stage.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-388\" alt=\"fig2\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig2.jpg\" width=\"632\" height=\"972\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig2.jpg 632w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig2-195x300.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Woody debris accumulations along fence-lines and between riparian vegetation can deflect flow and cause localised backwater effects raising local water levels (Fig. 3).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-389\" alt=\"fig3\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig3.jpg\" width=\"489\" height=\"776\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig3.jpg 489w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig3-189x300.jpg 189w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Flood transported trees tend to be transported with their roots facing up flow thereby minimising their resistance to flow (Fig. 4).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-390\" alt=\"fig4\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig4.jpg\" width=\"893\" height=\"754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig4.jpg 893w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig4-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig4-768x648.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 893px) 100vw, 893px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Isolated grounded large woody debris can act as major obstacles to the flow resulting in classic obstacle marks characterised by proximal scour hollows and distal \u2018tails\u2019 of sediment in the their lee (Fig. 5). \u00a0\u00a0Large debris accumulations can also result in flood flow deflection producing localised zones of lateral river bank erosion (Fig. 5).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2015\/05\/fig5.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Floods within high gradient streams can produce very large debris dams (Fig. 6).\u00a0 These accumulations often mimic the step and pool morphology of high gradient stream channels.
