HEPEX (which stands for <em>Hydrologic Ensemble Prediction Experiment<\/em>) began in 2004 just as I took up my first post as a University Lecturer. HEPEX aims to <strong>advance the science and practice of hydrological ensemble prediction<\/strong> and how it is used for risk-based decision making.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-566\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2017\/05\/1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"940\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2017\/05\/1.png 940w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2017\/05\/1-300x63.png 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2017\/05\/1-768x162.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Participation in HEPEX is open to anyone wishing to contribute to its objectives, and so the HEPEX community thrives through organising scientific workshops and sessions at major conferences (such as the European Geosciences Union General Assembly every Spring), coordinating joint experiments, highlighting best practice in hydrologic ensemble prediction systems to help practitioners find out how ensemble prediction is being used around the world in different applications (such as for hydropower or flood forecasting), and through our online community interaction including webinars and blog discussions (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hepex.org\/\">www.hepex.org<\/a>; @hepexorg).\u00a0 The HEPEX community are also very keen to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/hepex.irstea.fr\/the-first-online-hepex-game-try-it-yourself\/\">serious games to help communicate best practice<\/a> and to understand how we can improve forecast communication (Arnal et al, 2016)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-568\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2017\/05\/2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2017\/05\/2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2017\/05\/2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/flooding\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/139\/2017\/05\/2-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is not always easy to explain what you work on, especially when you have to avoid using jargon specific to your field. Yet, this is something that we all have to do. It is important to be able to <strong>explain your research simply<\/strong> in order to <strong>communicate effectively<\/strong> with scientists in other fields and, for example, businesses, policy makers and the public.\u00a0 This week in HEPEX we have been thinking about this with the help of a little competition: using only the 200 most commonly used words of the English dictionary, explain \u201c<em>Ensemble hydrological forecasting<\/em>\u201d.
