The <\/span><\/span><\/span>Brighton and Hove Food Partnership<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>, (<\/span><\/span>BHFP<\/span><\/span><\/a>)<\/span> is<\/span> a not-for-profit organisation<\/span> that <\/span><\/span>supports people to eat a healthy diet, learn how to cook, how to grow their own food, and waste less.<\/span><\/span> They are involved<\/span> across all areas of the food system within Brighton and Hove<\/span> and are<\/span><\/span> one of <\/span><\/span><\/span>four<\/span><\/span> community partners <\/span><\/span><\/span>working <\/span>to support<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Food Systems Equality<\/a> project [<\/span><\/span><\/span>FoodSEqual<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>] <\/span><\/span>\u2013 \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Co-production of healthy, sustainable food systems for disadvantaged communities<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/span> The <\/span><\/span><\/span>role of a <\/span><\/span>community partner<\/span><\/span><\/span> is to <\/span><\/span>use their existing <\/span><\/span><\/span>contacts, reputability<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>knowledge<\/span>,<\/span> and skills to <\/span>facilitate<\/span> the community research element of <\/span>FoodSEqual<\/span>. Each partner<\/span> in Reading<\/a><\/span> (Whit<\/span>l<\/span>e<\/span>y)<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>Brighton & Hove,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> Plymouth<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Tower Hamlets<\/span><\/span><\/a> (East <\/span>London) recruited<\/span> and trained <\/span>several<\/span> local <\/span><\/span>C<\/span>ommunity<\/span> R<\/span>esearchers<\/span><\/span><\/a> who care deeply about food, <\/span>environment,<\/span> and inequality<\/span>. These researchers <\/span>are involved in tests, <\/span>workshops,<\/span> and con<\/span>versations <\/span>to<\/span> gather data and<\/span> listen to the stories, opinions, needs and wants of <\/span>community members<\/span> in less affluent areas of their towns<\/span> or<\/span> cities. <\/span>Building trust<\/span>, <\/span>lending a listening <\/span>ear,<\/span> and<\/span> maintainin<\/span>g<\/span> cultural sensitivity are some of the key <\/span>values they <\/span>must<\/span> demonstrat<\/span>e<\/span> to <\/span>their<\/span> par<\/span>ticipants<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>October 2022<\/span>,<\/span> BHFP<\/span> held a<\/span> \u2018<\/span>C<\/span>ookery<\/span> and <\/span>C<\/span>onnection<\/span> Day’<\/span> networking event to bring Community Researchers and other<\/span> partners<\/span> in the <\/span>FoodSEqual<\/span> project together<\/span>.<\/span> The aim was <\/span>to meet<\/span> colleagues from across the project,<\/span> including<\/span><\/span>\u00a0business <\/span>partners <\/span>and<\/span> academics from the partnering <\/span>universities<\/span>,<\/span> who would like to learn more about the community research element in<\/span> practice, <\/span>deepen <\/span>understanding, share <\/span>learning\u00a0<\/span><\/span> and<\/span> build relationships that <\/span>will <\/span>be beneficial and strengthen <\/span>the work of <\/span>FoodSEqual<\/span> moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Introduction<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n

The<\/span> event began with an upon arrival exercise where people wrote down \u2018One thing I would like to get out of today\u2019. Some of the responses included connecting with fellow colleagues as well as learning more about the project so far.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vic Borrill, Director, BHFP gave a presentation which included an overview of the organisation\u2019s work. Questions afterwards spanned from how to set up a community compost scheme, to how to work effectively with Local Authorities. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Professor <\/span>Carol Wagstaff<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>FoodSEqual<\/span> P<\/span>rincipal <\/span>Investigator <\/span>– presented<\/span> a recap of the vision and aims<\/span> of FoodSEqual<\/span>, an update on the <\/span>work <\/span>so<\/span> far<\/span> and key findings <\/span>from the <\/span>project’s<\/span> communities <\/span>to<\/span> date<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Cookery class – \u201cConnecting through food\u201d<\/span><\/h4>\n

BHFP believes in the power of connecting over food, so in line with this<\/span>,<\/span> the group were invited to prepare lunch together in the partnership\u2019s <\/span>community kitchen<\/span><\/a> . This relaxed setting encouraged dialogue between colleagues many of whom had not actually met before. It also modelled how cooking and or eating food together can be a powerful catalyst for meaningful conversations across disciplines and between various communities. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After lunch, <\/span>Shelley <\/span>Taylor –<\/span> Research and<\/span> Policy Coordinator \u2013 <\/span>BHFP and Brighton and Hove Community Researchers<\/a>; Sara Fernee, Amanda Lucas, and Holly Cranfield presented their findings to the group<\/span>.<\/span> Their presentations outlined the population and social-economic diversity of Brighton and Hove, the types of community-based activities that they have organised over the last ten months to support FoodSEqual <\/span>and an excellent video that illustrated some of the work <\/span>conducted at local sites involving community members connecting with the gr<\/span>owing of cr<\/span>ops<\/span>.<\/span> These have included shopping basket discussion workshops, participatory observations during a <\/span>series of visits to Rock farm in Pulborough.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This acted as a springboard for fruitful discussions around research techniques, diversity and inclusion, language use and much more.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The day was a great success and <\/span>provided the opportunity for networking, sharing ideas and experiences and <\/span>the ongoing work by BHFP to support FoodSEqual by engaging the local c<\/span>ommunities. The FoodSEqual project team gained a really good understanding of the work of BHFP and how it supports the local community to i<\/span>mprove access to food that is healthy, affordable, and sustainable. It is supporting FoodSEqual <\/span>by<\/span>\u00a0putting<\/span> the community at the heart of the FoodSEqual project so that local people can lead change as well as supporting connection between communities and the people that supply their food.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
