Our work on GLOF and debris flows in Central Asia encompasses a series of research and PhD projects conducted in collaboration with the Cenral Asia Regional Glaciological Centre under the Auspices of UNESCO, al-Farabi National Kazakh University, the Hydrometeorological Research Institute, Uzbekistan, and Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Uzbekistan. We work closely with the regional disaster risk reduction agencies, most notably with the Kazakhstan State Agency for Mudflow Protection (KSAMP). We contribute to other international projects on hazards such as the UNESCO-coordinated project ‘Reducing Glaciall Lake Hazards in Central Asia‘ (GLOFCA) and Risk Data in High Mountain Asia (HiRISK). In 2022, our work on modelling the formation and evolution of glacial lakes in in the Tien Shan won the University of Reading Engagement and Impact Award. If you are interested in collaborating with our group or undertaking a relevant PhD project, please contact Prof. Maria Shahgedanova.
