{"id":23,"date":"2018-05-25T09:16:14","date_gmt":"2018-05-25T08:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glof-predicting-debris-flow\/?page_id=23"},"modified":"2024-08-22T10:57:38","modified_gmt":"2024-08-22T09:57:38","slug":"our-research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glof-predicting-debris-flow\/our-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our research on GLOF and debris flows in Central Asia addresses three main themes:<\/p>\n<p>(i) Documenting changes in glacial lakes in the Tien Shan and Pamir mountains;<\/p>\n<p>(ii) Developing predictions of the evolution of glacial lakes;<\/p>\n<p>(iii) Developing and applying new methods of rainfall forecast for early warning of the debris flow formation.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this work, we have developed new data sets on the bathymetry of glacial lakes located in Kazakhstan (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/earth-science\/articles\/10.3389\/feart.2023.1192719\/full\">Kapitsa et al., 2023<\/a>) and a spatially-referenced database of GLOF and debris flows in the Tien Shan. The projections of glacial lake formation and expansion, developed in these projects (<a href=\"https:\/\/nhess.copernicus.org\/articles\/17\/1837\/2017\/nhess-17-1837-2017.html\">Kapitsa et al., 2017<\/a>), is implemented by the Kazakhstan State Agency for Mudflow Protection (KSAMP) in the operational monitoring and management of glacial lakes.<\/p>\n<p>We work with the ECMWF to develop and implement a new precipitation forecast product (ecPoint Rainfall) to improve early warning of flash floods and debris flows in the mountains of Central Asia (<a href=\"https:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EGU23\/EGU23-13338.html\">Mamadjanova et al., 2023<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-299 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glof-predicting-debris-flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/317\/2024\/08\/Cscades-of-lakes-Jetisu-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glof-predicting-debris-flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/317\/2024\/08\/Cscades-of-lakes-Jetisu-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glof-predicting-debris-flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/317\/2024\/08\/Cscades-of-lakes-Jetisu-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glof-predicting-debris-flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/317\/2024\/08\/Cscades-of-lakes-Jetisu-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/glof-predicting-debris-flow\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/317\/2024\/08\/Cscades-of-lakes-Jetisu.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our research on GLOF and debris flows in Central Asia addresses three main themes: (i) Documenting changes in glacial lakes in the Tien Shan and Pamir mountains;
