Academics, students and the local community are invited to (re)discover classic monster films. Victims or fiends, the protagonists in these interwar films challenge us to question our perceptions of monstrosity but also of normality.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2017\/09\/FILM-Nosferatu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-265 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2017\/09\/FILM-Nosferatu-300x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2017\/09\/FILM-Nosferatu-300x213.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2017\/09\/FILM-Nosferatu.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wednesday 11th October: <strong>The Golem<\/strong> (1920), Minghella Studios, 7pm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>An immediate success upon its release in 1920, <em>The Golem<\/em> is a seldom-screened\u00a0Gothic horror gem from Germany&#8217;s Weimar era. Set in the\u00a016th-century, it is\u00a0based on the legend of\u00a0a rabbi who\u00a0creates the Golem \u2013 a giant creature made of clay \u2013 in order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution. The film showing will be preceded by a talk on<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>&#8216;Visualising\u00a0Monstrosity\u00a0in Early Gothic Cinema\u2019 by <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.mmu.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/profile\/index.php?id=32\">Dr Xavier Aldana Reyes<\/a>, author of\u00a0<em>Horror Film and Affect<\/em> and <em>Digital Horror: Haunted Technologies, Network Panic and the Found Footage Phenomenon\u00a0<\/em>amongst other publications.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wednesday 18th October:\u00a0<strong>Nosferatu\u00a0<\/strong>(1922), Minghella Studios, 7pm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Based on gothic classic <em>Dracula, Nosferatu <\/em>is an early horror masterpiece. The film will be introduced by Evan Hayles Gledhill, researcher of monstrosities and masculinities at the University of Reading.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wednesday 25th October: <strong>Freaks<\/strong> (1932),\u00a0Palmer G10, 7pm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tod Browning\u2019s controversial classic features real actors from carnival shows and asks vital questions about cultural perceptions of \u2018normality\u2019 and \u2018monstrosity\u2019. The film will be introduced by Evan Hayles Gledhill, researcher of monstrosities and masculinities at the University of Reading.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tickets cost \u00a35 and no booking is required.
