I began to realise this at the tender age of eight, when our teacher asked us to write a series of diary entries from the perspective of someone during the Great Plague. It seems that I\u2019ve never really grown up: over the next nine days, I will be tweeting as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/17thcenturymum\">17<sup>th<\/sup>-century mum<\/a>, Alice Thornton (1626-1707), whose young daughter Nally fell dangerously sick 351 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2018\/05\/fullsizeoutput_13f3.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-315\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2018\/05\/fullsizeoutput_13f3-300x238.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2018\/05\/fullsizeoutput_13f3-300x238.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2018\/05\/fullsizeoutput_13f3-768x608.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2018\/05\/fullsizeoutput_13f3-1024x811.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The tweets are based on real diary entries by Alice and other 17<sup>th<\/sup>-century parents, which I encountered while researching for my first book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/the-sick-child-in-early-modern-england-1580-1720-9780198713470?cc=gb&amp;lang=en\">The Sick Child<\/a><\/em><em>. <\/em>Winner of the 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.ac.uk\/research\/activity\/mds\/centres\/eahmh\/prizes\/index.aspx\">EAHMH Prize<\/a>, this book shows that while illness was a source of great anguish for young patients and their families, it was also a time of tender loving care and mutual affection.<\/p>\n<p>On the 7<sup>th \u00a0<\/sup>June my second book will be coming out, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/misery-to-mirth-9780198779025?q=misery%20to%20mirth&amp;lang=en&amp;cc=gb\">Misery to Mirth<\/a><\/em><em>, <\/em>which investigates what it was like to recover from a life-threatening illness in the 17<sup>th\u00a0<\/sup>century. Courtesy of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wellcome.ac.uk\/home\">Wellcome Trust<\/a>, this book will be free to download.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2018\/05\/Frontcover-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-312\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/health-humanities\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/97\/2018\/05\/Frontcover-copy-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Together, the books overturn two myths: the first is that high rates of mortality led to cold and aloof relationships between family members in the premodern period.
