Scholars have long been familiar with the scientific endeavours of late
\n19th-century women travellers like Isabella Bird and Mary Kingsley, but
\nthese figures have generally been assumed to be pioneers, blazing a new
\npath\u00a0for scientifically inclined women. Recent research, however, has begun
\nto\u00a0uncover Bird and Kingsley’s many predecessors in the 18th- and early\u00a019th-centuries – women such as Maria Riddell, Maria Graham and Sarah\u00a0Bowdich, whose journeys to regions such as the West Indies, South America\u00a0and West Africa were productive of scientific knowledge and debate across a\u00a0range of disciplines.<\/p>\n

This two-day workshop, organised by Nottingham Trent University’s Centre for\u00a0Travel Writing Studies and sponsored by the British Academy, seeks to shed\u00a0further light on women’s scientific travelling in the period before 1850. We\u00a0accordingly welcome proposals for papers which explore any aspect of the\u00a0intersections between women, science, travel and travel writing at this\u00a0date, including (but not limited to): women who travelled in scientific\u00a0spirit, conducting fieldwork or other forms of research; women who used\u00a0travel writing as means of engaging with or contributing to contemporary\u00a0scientific debate; the discursive and rhetorical obstacles faced by\u00a0scientifically inclined women; the wider intellectual and cultural \u00a0networks\u00a0which enabled and assisted women’s participation in contemporary\u00a0science;\u00a0and women’s role as travellers between different scientific communities and\u00a0audiences.<\/p>\n

Papers will be delivered in English, but we welcome proposals on\u00a0non-Anglophone travellers and travel writing. To offer a paper, or
