CALL FOR PAPERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Past as Nightmare:\u00a0An interdisciplinary conference at the University of Reading (UK)
\n6-7 September 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keynote speakers:\u00a0Dr Ailise Bulfin & Professor Laurence Talairach<\/p>\n

The gothic has a complex relationship with the past, and with history as a discipline. Much of the early body of gothic fiction is set in the past, often in the form of \u2018found\u2019 historical documents, whilst the past also functions as an inescapable nemesis, returning to haunt modernity. How is the past as a concept and as haunting interpreted in gothic horror literature? How is the discipline of history itself, and the historian or antiquarian as an individual, portrayed in the gothic mode?<\/p>\n

Proposals can address any chronological period, from the eighteenth century to the present, and any particular national gothic form.<\/p>\n

Subjects could include, though are by no means limited to:<\/p>\n

\u2660 interconnections between history and the gothic \u2660 gothic texts as primary sources in History \u2660 the past as nemesis in the gothic texts \u2660 the gothic and historical archives \u2660 the gothic text as \u2018found\u2019 archival manuscript \u2660 the gothic and the history of sexuality \u2660 the gothic and the history of gender \u2660 the gothic and colonial history \u2660 history as \u2018grave-robbing\u2019 \u2660 portrayals of historians in gothic fiction \u2660 academia in gothic fiction \u2660 the gothic and totalitarian re-writing of history \u2660 the archaeological gothic<\/p>\n

Abstracts of up to 300 words should be sent to d.g.renshaw@reading.ac.uk<\/a> by 28 January 2022.<\/p>\n
