Gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1732\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1732\" style=\"width: 158px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/4Equisetum.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1732\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/4Equisetum-296x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Equisetum, originally thought to be a gold hyperaccumulator but other evidence suggests not.\" width=\"158\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/4Equisetum-296x1024.jpg 296w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/4Equisetum-87x300.jpg 87w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/4Equisetum-768x2654.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/4Equisetum-444x1536.jpg 444w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/4Equisetum-593x2048.jpg 593w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/4Equisetum-scaled.jpg 741w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Equisetum<\/i>, originally thought to be a gold hyperaccumulator but other evidence suggests not.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Perhaps the most obvious plants to write about are the numerous species with gold (aurea and its forms) in their names.\u00a0 These range from <i>Abrus aureus,<\/i> a climbing vine in the pea family that is native only to Madagascar, to<i> Zizia aurea <\/i>or &#8220;Golden Alexander&#8221;, a yellow flowered member of the carrot family native to north America, however this is not the most interesting story of gold to be reported by far.<\/p>\n<p>Several plant species are able to accumulate metals, some in quite high concentrations by accumulation from the soil.\u00a0 This process is known as phytomining and can be the most cost effective way of concentrating low levels of heavy metals from soil.\u00a0 A major report by the US geological survey in 1968, <a title=\"Equisetum gold\" href=\"http:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/bul\/1278a\/report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Metal Absorption by <em>Equisetum<\/em> (Horsetail)<\/a>, suggested that reports of horsetail (<em>Equisetum<\/em>) accumulating high levels of gold from the environment were questionable although it did contain some gold.\u00a0 A later report USGS 1970 covered the topic more generally in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.usgs.gov\/bul\/1314b\/report.pdf\">Absorption of Gold by Plants<\/a>&#8220;.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Other plants have been <a title=\"Phytomining\" href=\"www.researchgate.net\/publication\/215566962_Phytomining_for_nickel_thallium_and_gold\/file\/79e41508055e219f79.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">shown to accumulate<\/a> a range of metals including Gold, prominent among these are members of the cabbage family (Brassicaceae).\u00a0 Several members of Brassicaceae are known to accumulate heavy metals including lead as well as gold.\u00a0 Recently it has been shown that the gold is stored as nanoparticles in plant cells.\u00a0 The growing of metal accumulating plants on polluted soils and the subsequent accumulation of metals can be important in cleaning up these soils, so-called phytoremediation and <a title=\"gold phytoextraction\" href=\"http:\/\/www.degruyter.com\/view\/j\/gps.2014.3.issue-1\/gps-2013-0103\/gps-2013-0103.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phytoextraction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4483\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/2014-botanical-advent-calendar-day-4-gold\/freddo_unwrappedb\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4483\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4483\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/Freddo_unwrappedB-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freddo &#8211; but not the gold deposit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A paper in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ncomms3614\">Nature Communications<\/a> showed the use of <em>Eucalyptus<\/em> for bioprospecting at the Freddo Gold deposit and stated &#8220;Here we show the first evidence of particulate Au within natural specimens of living biological tissue (not from laboratory experimentation). This observation conclusively demonstrates active biogeochemical adsorption of Au and provides insight into its behaviour in natural samples.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So whether you want real gold from hyperaccumulators or are happy with gold coloured plants there is a range of species to cater for your needs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>References<\/p>\n<p>Lintern, Melvyn et al., 2013.
