The cocoa tree is small, not unlike a dwarfed apple tree in size, and is native to the tropical Amazonian forests. Over 3,500 years ago the Olmecs of Mexico were the first civilisation to use cocoa beans widely. They roasted and ground the beans, mixed in vanilla, chilli and spices to make a cold, bitter, savoury drink.\u00a0The powers imbued by chocolate were thought to include spiritual wisdom, physical stamina and enhanced sexual prowess, what\u2019s not to love about it?<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1878\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1878\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/cocoa-beans-nigeria.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1878\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/cocoa-beans-nigeria-300x290.jpg\" alt=\"Nigerian cocoa beans \" width=\"300\" height=\"290\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/cocoa-beans-nigeria-300x290.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/cocoa-beans-nigeria-768x743.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/cocoa-beans-nigeria.jpg 794w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nigerian cocoa beans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Later it was discovered that judicious use of sugars could turn this bitter gruel into such a sweet devine delight that inevitably choco-mania spread throughout Europe. Plantations were established in other equatorial countries and West Africa is now the centre of world cocoa cultivation producing 70% of the world\u2019s cocoa with four major cocoa producers \u2013 Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon.<\/p>\n<p>Chocolate is made from a fruit \u2013 the cocoa bean \u2013 and around 50 almond-sized cocoa beans are contained within a cocoa pod, enough to make about eight bars of milk chocolate or four bars of dark chocolate.\u00a0No doubt due to generations of inbreeding Cocoa is very prone to diseases and scientific research into disease resistance is a key element of the <a title=\"ICGD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.icgd.rdg.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Cocoa Quarantine Centre<\/a> based at the <a title=\"Cocoas research at Reading\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/apd\/research\/apd-rescrg.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">University of Reading<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/stepstochocolate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1879\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/stepstochocolate.jpg\" alt=\"stepstochocolate\" width=\"600\" height=\"865\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/stepstochocolate.jpg 710w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2014\/12\/stepstochocolate-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Britain really is a nation of chocolate lovers consuming 11kg per person per year on average \u2013 about 3 chocolate bars a week. The UK chocolate industry is worth more than \u00a34billion and sales of chocolate (most recently in dark chocolate products) just keep growing and growing. Today we hardly need chocolate to survive and excessive consumption contributes to obesity, but in moderation there are benefits. Chocolate contains over 300 chemicals including vitamins and minerals, even the smell of chocolate can induce relaxation and a cup of pure cocoa has twice the antioxidant content of green tea. Chocolate contains phenylethylamine which is released naturally in the body when ardour is inflamed, it also contains dopamine \u2013 a natural painkiller \u2013 and serotonin which produces feelings of pleasure.
