Today&#8217;s entry owes thanks to <a title=\"Dawn Bazely\" href=\"http:\/\/iris.info.yorku.ca\/our-people\/core-faculty\/dawn-bazely\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Professor Dawn Bazely <\/a>(York University, Toronto, Canada) who suggested the idea (Dawn was last seen on #AdventBotany Day 9 Dogwood).\u00a0 This strikingly large and often very colourful flower is commonly sold as a Christmas gift.<\/p>\n<p class=\"js-tweet-text tweet-text\" lang=\"en\">Dawn writes:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was surprised to discover from a <a title=\"Amaryllis Daily Telegraph\" href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/gardening\/3345515\/Amaryllis-the-power-flower.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">2007 <em>Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a> column, that Amaryllis is the most popular Christmas cut-flower in the UK. The taxonomic debate culminated in a decision by the 14th <a title=\"International Botanical Congress\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Botanical_Congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Botanical Congress<\/a> in 1987 that <em>Amaryllis <\/em>should be a conserved name (i.e. correct regardless of priority) and ultimately based on a specimen of the South African <em>Amaryllis belladonna<\/em> from the <a title=\"George Clifford Herbarium\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/research-curation\/scientific-resources\/collections\/botanical-collections\/clifford-herbarium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">George Clifford Herbarium<\/a> at the British Museum (see <a title=\"Meerow et al\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/discover\/1224287?sid=21105477576903&amp;uid=4&amp;uid=3738032&amp;uid=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">Meerow et al. 1997<\/a>).
