In Saudi Arabia there are more than<a title=\"widad aljuhani\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/phd\/widad-aljuhani\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> 450<\/a> date cultivars and in Oman more than <a title=\"Thuraiya dates\" href=\"http:\/\/wp.me\/p2v2jN-1Ra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">200<\/a>. Dates are traditionally eaten either fresh, dried or preserved in honey.\u00a0 Fresh dates are far less stickily sweet than dried ones but have a shorter season as they do not store well.\u00a0 Dried dates are available all year round and can be eaten as an accompaniment to strong coffee where the sweetness balances the bitterness of the coffee.\u00a0 Fresh dates are becoming more <a title=\"Guardian dates\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2013\/jan\/24\/dates-truly-fruit-of-paradise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">readily available<\/a> in the UK now.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_687\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-687\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2013\/11\/WA12.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-687\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2013\/11\/WA12-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"The date festival held during harvest season where farmers can offer the different varieties they grow\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-687\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The date festival held during harvest season where farmers can offer the different varieties they grow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two of our current students have a great interest in dates:<\/p>\n<p>Widad Aljuhani has written extensively about dates in Saudi Arabia and is working for a PhD on identification techniques and sex determination in the <a title=\"candy of the desert\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/candy-of-the-desert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Saudi cultivars<\/a>. She provided this photograph of the annual date festival in Saudi Arabia that gives an idea of the sheer scale of date production there.<\/p>\n<p>Thuraiya Al Jabri is a MSc student from Oman with a great personal and professional interest in dates and who has written an <a title=\"Thuraiya dates\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tropical-biodiversity\/2014\/12\/the-date-palm-a-special-plant-from-the-old-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">intriguing blog<\/a> about the botany and cultural importance of dates in Oman.\u00a0 She reports on a whole range of uses for the date palm beyond fruit production.\u00a0 Did you know bees are kept in hollowed out date palm trunks, and that baskets and <a title=\"tabseel in oman\" href=\"http:\/\/www.timesofoman.com\/news\/37169\/Article-%E2%80%98Tabseel%E2%80%99-spurs-economic-boom-in-Al-Mudhaibi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tabseel<\/a> date cooking are other ways to use products of the date palm.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1945\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/eIMG_8527datesOman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1945\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/12\/eIMG_8527datesOman-1024x320.jpg\" alt=\"Typical Omani date farm\" width=\"600\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Typical Omani date farm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The date palm has also provided <a title=\"RNG herbarium\" href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reading University Herbarium<\/a> with one of its more <a title=\"camel date palm\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/ship-of-the-desert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unusual specimens<\/a>, collected in Morocco by Stephen Jury.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1213\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1213\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0140-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1213\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2014\/06\/DSC_0140-1-649x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Is RNG really a zoo?
