id=\"caption-attachment-1824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vines in southern France<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Grapes form the basis of wine and differing sources offer wildly different estimates of the number of grape cultivars cultivated to make wine.\u00a0 For instance Berry Bros. &amp; Rudd in London offer a list of <a title=\"Berry Bros\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbr.com\/grape-varieties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">143<\/a> varieties of grape from which they stock wine, while Wikipedia list 335 Red grape varieties and 418 White grape varieties used for wine making and <a title=\"Wine tutor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mywinetutor.com\/grapetypes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wine Tutor claims over 5000<\/a> varieties (but does not attempt to list them).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The spice content of mulled wine varies over time but <a title=\"cinnamon\" href=\"http:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/life\/botany\/cinnamon1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cinnamon<\/a>, <a title=\"Ginger\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tropical-biodiversity\/2014\/02\/ginger-zingiber-officinale-rosc-aromatic-spice-and-medicinal-herb\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ginger<\/a>, <a title=\"Nutmeg and mace\" href=\"http:\/\/www.botanical.com\/botanical\/mgmh\/n\/nutmeg07.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nutmeg, mace<\/a>, <a title=\"Piper longum\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Long_pepper\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Piper longum<\/em><\/a>, Star Anise, Cardamom and <a title=\"Clove\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clove\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cloves<\/a> are each listed in at least some recipes.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery
