It is the name for those with a true love of snowdrops. These tiny plants contain a treatment for mild Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Galantamine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Galantamine<\/a>, but that can also be found in <em>Narcissus<\/em> and other related plants. This blog is not about medicine, it is about obsession.<\/p>\n<p>Many gardeners think of snowdrops as a sign of spring, looking forward to the great white sheets of <em>Galanthus nivalis<\/em> that brighten up January and February in the UK but there are other less known species with different characters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2776\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2776\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/Welford2015.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2776\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/Welford2015.jpg\" alt=\"A carpet of Galanthus nivalis in bloom during February 2015 (Photo: Alastair Culham)\" width=\"600\" height=\"381\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2776\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A carpet of <i>Galanthus nivalis<\/i> in bloom during February 2015 (Photo: Alastair Culham)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps one of the first true Galanthophiles was <a href=\"http:\/\/eabowlessociety.org.uk\/history.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">E.A. Bowles<\/a>, a Victorian gentleman and long time member of the Royal Horticultural Society who is commemorated in two snowdrop cultivars: <em>Galanthus plicatus<\/em> &#8216;E.A. Bowles&#8217; and <em>Galanthus plicatus<\/em> &#8216;Augustus&#8217;.\u00a0 Sadly his writings focused on <em>Crocus<\/em> and <em>Narcissus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The first snowdrop species into flower each year is <em>G. reginae-olgae<\/em>, discovered in Greece in 1876, which starts flowering in September and can continue into December.\u00a0 It is larger than the common snowdrop and it&#8217;s leaves are slightly greener however it does make a beautiful plant for the garden and is easy to grow.\u00a0 Given it&#8217;s flowering season it is truly an Advent snowdrop!<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_2778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2778\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/450px-Galanthus_reginae-olgae_clump2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2778 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/450px-Galanthus_reginae-olgae_clump2.jpg\" alt=\"By Meneerke bloem (Own work) [GFDL (http:\/\/www.gnu.org\/copyleft\/fdl.html) or CC BY-SA 3.0 (http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/3.0)], via Wikimedia Commons\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Galanthus reginae-olgae<\/i> flowers in the autumn<\/figcaption><\/figure>But these two species are only 10% of snowdrop diversity, there are 20 species of <em>Galanthus<\/em> spread around Europe, western Asia and the middle east. All species have a similar basic appearance of strap like green or grey-green leaves with nodding white flowers but there is a lot of variation in the detail.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2782\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2782\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/Galanthus-map2.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2782\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/Galanthus-map2.jpeg\" alt=\"A map of countries in which Galanthus is native. (by Andrew Bewsey &amp; Jordan Bilsborrow).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their relationships and species limits have been the subject of study for a long time and the botanist, and University of Reading alumnus, Aaron Davis has perhaps studied them most closely over the past three decades while working at Kew.\u00a0 Understanding of the species relationships is now based on DNA sequence work.<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/Galanthus-Phylogeny1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2777\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/Galanthus-Phylogeny1.jpg\" alt=\"Galanthus Phylogeny1\" width=\"564\" height=\"785\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Galanthophilia<\/h2>\n<p>Species diversity is not the end of the story with snowdrops; novel cultivars (selections made by growers and breeders) are the great desire of snowdrop enthusiasts (people known as Galanthophiles).\u00a0 It is here that you begin to realise what an obsession snowdrops can become. One of the most impressive illustrations of what is becoming snowdrop fever is the list of prices paid for new cultivars:<\/p>\n<p>2011 a single bulb of <em>Galanthus plicatus<\/em> &#8216;E.A. Bowles&#8217; sold for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/gardening\/8295156\/Snowdrop-bulb-bought-for-a-record-350.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a3350<\/a>\u00a0 (a cultivar raised at <a href=\"http:\/\/johngrimshawsgardendiary.blogspot.com\/2011\/01\/galanthus-plicatus-eabowles-some.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myddelton House<\/a>, Enfield)<\/p>\n<p>2012 a single bulb of <em>Galanthus woronowii<\/em> \u2018Elizabeth Harrison\u2019 sold for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thompson-morgan.com\/worlds-highest-price-paid-for-snowdrop-bulb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a3725<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2015 a single bulb of <em>Galanthus plicatus<\/em> \u2018Golden Fleece\u2019 sold for <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.new.spectator.co.uk\/2015\/02\/single-snowdrop-sells-for-1390-welcome-to-galanthomania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a31390<\/a> plus \u00a34 p&amp;p on ebay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2779\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2779\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/expensivesnowdrop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2779\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2015\/12\/expensivesnowdrop.png\" alt=\"World's most expensive snowdrop - so far!\" width=\"600\" height=\"344\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">World&#8217;s most expensive snowdrop &#8211; so far!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So, as you enjoy those delicate white flowers each winter, have a good look in case you have the latest new snowdrop cultivar in your garden.\u00a0 That would be a really good Christmas present!<\/p>\n<h3>References<\/h3>\n<p>Bishop, M., Davis, A.P. &amp; Grimshaw, J.M.
