They are ubiquitous during the holiday season in Canada and the USA, showing up everywhere &#8212; on Christmas trees, as stir sticks in hot chocolate, on doughnuts (below), and as decorations on gifts. They also appear in Biology classes as incentives provided by students to encourage fellow students to pay attention to their class presentations!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In recent years, a novelty flower, the Candy Cane Chrysanthemum, has\u00a0occasionally appeared in my local florist. One turned up in a flower arrangement that I received as a Christmas gift, a few years ago. I was intrigued by the green and red stripes running through the white flower, because they reminded me of one of my favourite childhood botany experiments.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3710\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3710\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-2016-how-do-you-create-a-candy-cane-chrysanthemum\/2014-12-07-15-52-00\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3710\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3710\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/2014-12-07-15.52.00-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"http:\/\/dawnbazely.lab.yorku.ca\/files\/2015\/11\/2014-12-07-15.52.00.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Candy Cane Chrysanthemum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Did you ever put a celery stick into water coloured with ink, and watch the xylem turn the colour of the ink? Here\u2019s the experiment pictured in my Ladybird book about plants dating back to the 1960s:\u00a0<em>Plants and how they grow<\/em>. This book was one of the things that inspired me to become a scientist, and a plant ecologist!
