{"id":3779,"date":"2016-12-07T23:53:38","date_gmt":"2016-12-07T23:53:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/?p=3779"},"modified":"2016-12-07T23:53:38","modified_gmt":"2016-12-07T23:53:38","slug":"clove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/2016\/12\/07\/clove\/","title":{"rendered":"Advent Botany 2016 &#8211; Day 7: The Clove"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/clove\/cloves-penang-zanzibar\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3781\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3781 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/Cloves-penang-zanzibar-206x300.png\" alt=\"Cloves-penang-zanzibar\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>To the microscopist, clove oil used to be one of the best smelling agents when preparing samples for permanent mounting on a glass slide.\u00a0 The corridor soon filled with the wonderful rich smell.\u00a0 However, cloves have a much wider range of uses including traditional use in herbal medicine to ease tooth-ache and to improve digestion. \u00a0 Cloves also make up part of the popular mixture with cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg, of winter spices to flavour cakes, puddings and such like.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Cloves are an unusual spice because they are dried flower buds while most spices are either fruit\/seeds (nutmeg, star anise etc.) or vegetative parts such as stems (ginger, turmeric, cinnamon) and leaves (kaffir lime).<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/clove\/single_clove_on_white_paper\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3782\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3782\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/Single_clove_on_white_paper-1024x579.jpg\" alt=\"Single_clove_on_white_paper\" width=\"600\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Syzygium aromaticum<\/em>, the clove, is a member Myrtaceae, a family full of aromatic species from the common myrtle (<em>Myrtus communis<\/em>) to the largest broad-leaved trees in the world, <em>Eucalyptus<\/em>.\u00a0 It is native to Indonesia but is now cultivated in many parts of the tropics and has been in use, particularly in India and China for some 2000 years.\u00a0 Flower buds are harvested and air-dried in great masses before storage.\u00a0 The major scented element of cloves is the chemical eugenol (named for the genus <em>Eugenia<\/em><em>,<\/em> another generic name for the clove plant).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3786\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3786\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/clove\/seasonal_clove_buds_drying_on_pemba1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3786\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3786\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/Seasonal_clove_buds_drying_on_Pemba1.jpg\" alt=\"Clove buds drying\" width=\"600\" height=\"410\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3786\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clove buds drying<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An orange can be decorated with cloves to make a scented pomander, a modern version of the original 13th century pomanders which were scented with ambergris, musk or civet.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3799\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3799\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/clove\/donnapomander2016\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3799\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3799\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/DonnaPomander2016-896x1024.jpg\" alt=\"@HerbariumDonna has made this beautiful pomander.
