our string is from a swamp loving plant, the <em>Raphia.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3938\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3938\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/?attachment_id=3938\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3938\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3938\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/feather-eco-gift-wrapping-300x257.jpg\" alt=\"Image from janemeansblog.com\" width=\"300\" height=\"257\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image from janemeansblog.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fine examples of raffia string adorning parcels can be found here:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/janemeansblog.com\/raffia-ideas-in-gift-wrapping-craft-projects\/\">http:\/\/janemeansblog.com\/raffia-ideas-in-gift-wrapping-craft-projects\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The string is a fibre produced from the membrane on the underside of each individual frond leaf.\u00a0 There are c. 20 species of <em>Raphia<\/em>, mostly concentrated in West and Central Africa.\u00a0 <em>Raphia <\/em>are easily distinguished from other palms by their rather messy appearance as the leaves remain on the plant after death.\u00a0 They also have distinctive fruits that are covered in symmetrical rows of large, shiny, overlapping scales.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3941\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3941\" style=\"width: 202px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/?attachment_id=3941\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3941\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3941\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/Raphia_taedigera-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"A cleaned up |Raphia taedigera Image from: plantillustrations.org\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A cleaned up |<i>Raphia taedigera<\/i> Image from: plantillustrations.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The carpological collection at the RHS herbarium (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/science\/conservation-biodiversity\/conserving-garden-plants\/rhs-herbarium\">WSY<\/a>) contains a fruit of <em>Raphia taedigera<\/em>, the <em>Raphia <\/em>that is said to be the source of Raffia fibre.\u00a0 This is the new world representative and the most widely dispersed of all the <em>Raphia <\/em>palms.<\/p>\n<p>Our collection was donated as a result of an enquiry by one of our members who discovered it being used as a packing material in a parcel of goods sent from Korea.\u00a0 The fruit is sitting on a traditional bag used by men, made, in part, from <em>Raphia <\/em>gathered in the Bamenda Highlands of Cameroon.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3942\" style=\"width: 534px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/?attachment_id=3942\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3942\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3942 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/RaphiaCameroon.jpg\" alt=\"Fruit of Raphia taedigera Image by Y.Harvey \u00a9RHS \" width=\"534\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fruit of <i>Raphia taedigera<\/i><br \/> Image by Y.Harvey \u00a9RHS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3943\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3943\" style=\"width: 230px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/?attachment_id=3943\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3943\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3943\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2016\/12\/NurseryCatalogueRHS-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sundries catalogue for H. Scott &amp; Sons (London, England) \u00a9 RHS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the less well known collections held by the RHS Lindley Library are the Nursery Catalogues.\u00a0 Along with a 1925 Nursery catalogue, we have an earlier sundries catalogue for H.
