I thought their idea was fun and original, and I contributed to posts on popular North American festive plants: <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/2014-advent-botany-day-9-red-osier-dogwood-cornus-sericea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">red-osier dogwood<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/2014-advent-botany-day-23-poinsettia-euphorbia-pulcherrima\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">poinsettia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/2014-advent-botany-day-18-amaryllis-hippeastrum-spp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">amaryllis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4385\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4385\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-day-2-cultivated-cranberries-beyond-the-festive-season\/1_cranberry_bog_weller_wikimedia\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4385\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4385 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2017\/12\/1_Cranberry_bog_Weller_Wikimedia-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">American cranberries growing in a marsh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since then, Advent Botany has entertained and educated me about the dizzying array of plants involved in Christmas traditions all over the world. I\u2019m positive that botanists will continue to tell us about many more plants that have Advent associations. After all, there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-36230858\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">over 350,000 species of flowering plants<\/a>, but this year, I asked to revisit one of my favourite bog plants, the cranberry. Not the European species, <em>Vaccinium oxycoccus<\/em>, but rather, its North American relative, <em>Vaccinium macrocarpon, <\/em>which has a much larger berry.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4386\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4386\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-day-2-cultivated-cranberries-beyond-the-festive-season\/2_garland_os_rc_2351_wd_2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4386\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4386\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2017\/12\/2_garland_OS_RC_2351_WD_2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4386\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cranberry and Popcorn garlands \u2013 Ocean Spray website<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Due to widespread cultivation, which <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.library.si.edu\/blog\/2017\/11\/14\/native-fruit-cranberry-seasons\/#.Wh08QrQ-dqy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dates back 200 years<\/a>, the North American cranberry has transcended its seasonal role, from the sauce served alongside turkey at Canadian (October) and American (November) Thanksgivings, and Christmas celebrations, to its use as a decoration. Cranberry and popcorn garlands are an old-fashioned, biodegradable way to decorate Christmas trees.<\/p>\n<p>Cranberry juice and cranberries, which freeze and dry well, are available year round. One of my favourite recipes is Cranberry Nutmeg Dumplings from June Johnston\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/cranberry.ca\/product\/cranberry-cookbook\/\"><em>The Cranberry Cookbook<\/em><\/a>, a spectacular and spectacularly easy stove-top dessert, that will wow your friends. I clipped and kept this reliable recipe from the October 17, 2001 issue of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/\"><em>Toronto Star<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4391\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4391\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-day-2-cultivated-cranberries-beyond-the-festive-season\/4_cranberry-nutmeg-dumpling-recipe\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4391\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4391\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2017\/12\/4_Cranberry-nutmeg-dumpling-recipe-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4391\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cranberry nutmeg dumpling recipe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Cranberries also have medicinal properties. Drinking cranberry juice is a popular preventative for urinary tract infections, and research backs <span style=\"color: #274e13\">up their effect<\/span> (Lynch 2004).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4387\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4387\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-day-2-cultivated-cranberries-beyond-the-festive-season\/3_frozen_dried-cranberries\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4387\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4387 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2017\/12\/3_frozen_dried-cranberries-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4387\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frozen and dried cranberries (Photo &#8211; Dawn Bazely)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Well before supermarket juice dominance, the North American cranberry enjoyed a rich and important history of use by <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.library.si.edu\/blog\/2017\/11\/14\/native-fruit-cranberry-seasons\/#.WhF3YrT81qx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Nations<\/a>. Julia Blakely\u2019s superb post at the Smithsonian Libraries <strong>Unbound Blog<\/strong>, <em>Native Fruit: Cranberry for all Seasons<\/em>, tells us that cranberries have been harvested by the Wampanoag Nation for 12,000 years.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1969, the Iroquois Cranberry Growers, to the north of Toronto, had expanded their commercial cranberry marsh to 68 acres, to become <a href=\"https:\/\/muskokanewswatch.com\/2017\/04\/wahta-mohawks-announce-closure-of-iroquois-cranberry-growers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ontario\u2019s largest cranberry farm<\/a>. Unfortunately, over time, a flood of cranberries on the international market <a href=\"http:\/\/barrie.ctvnews.ca\/iroquois-cranberry-growers-will-grow-no-more-1.3382983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">drove prices down<\/a> from $1.45\/lb in the mid-1990s to around 27 cents\/lb, leading Wahta Mohawk First Nation, which owns Iroquois Cranberry Growers, to announced its <a href=\"http:\/\/iroquoiscranberries.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decision to close<\/a> one of my local cranberry businesses.<\/p>\n<p>At her Smithsonian Libraries blog post, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SILibraries\/status\/931221644194074626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">which I discovered through Twitter<\/a>, Julia Blakely used Open Access references to trace the use of cranberries by North American indigenous peoples prior to the arrival of Europeans, to the emergence of commercial cultivation techniques, beginning in 1816, when:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRevolutionary War veteran Henry Hall, captain of the schooner\u00a0<em>Viana<\/em>, began successfully to cultivate vines in Massachusetts.
