In previous years we\u2019ve contributed essays on <a href=\"https:\/\/botanistinthekitchen.blog\/2016\/12\/16\/virgin-birth-and-hidden-treasures-unwrapping-some-christmas-figs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">figs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/botanistinthekitchen.blog\/2015\/12\/21\/winter-mint\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">peppermint<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/botanistinthekitchen.blog\/2015\/12\/20\/sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">sugar<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>December is the time to bring out the fancy Christmas china, polish the silver pitchers, and . . .\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cookinglight.com\/healthy-living\/home\/how-to-decorate-pineapple-christmas-trees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">bedeck your best bromeliads<\/a>. In 2017, as in 1700, no proper hostess can be without\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thisisinsider.com\/christmas-tree-pineapples-2017-11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a pineapple<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/introducing-the-pineapple-christmas-tree-our-new-favorite_us_5a0202b8e4b0b422a3c5ccfd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"broken_link\">for her centerpiece<\/a>. Here we unpack the botany of pineapple, which is as complicated and fabulous as its cultural history. A proper hostess, after all, should also be able to dazzle her guests with tales of tropical fruit morphology.<\/p>\n\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The main blog for today is hosted at the Botanist in the Kitchen Blog and is a wonderful tour through the botany of a pineapple, it&#8217;s infructescence and how to make a pineapple based table decoration (Did the authors watch <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blue_Peter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blue Peter<\/a> in their youth? <em>Both authors assure me Blue Peter did not cross the Atlantic &#8211; what a shame!<\/em>). <span style=\"color: #ff0000\">For the full and strange story of #AdventBotany2017 pineapple read the <a style=\"color: #ff0000\" href=\"https:\/\/botanistinthekitchen.blog\/2017\/12\/14\/a-holiday-pineapple-for-the-table\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BitK Blog Here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Editor&#8217;s note<\/h2>\n<p>We&#8217;ve been growing pineapples in the glasshouses at Reading University ever since the refit of our <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/tropical-biodiversity\/annual-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tropical glasshouse in 2011\/12<\/a>.
