Hazel, walnuts and almonds can all be grown in the UK and around much of the rest of Europe however the Brazil nut really does come from Brazil and it has a fascinating biological story. The pecan has now replaced the brazil as the exotic nut of choice for a standard supermarket bag of mixed nuts due to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk\/4065611.stm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fear of aflatoxins<\/a> in the shell-on nuts but this is a poor second choice in my opinion. Shelled brazils are still readily available.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4707\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4707\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-day-17-a-tough-nut-to-crack\/brazilnutuor\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4707\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-4707\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2017\/12\/BrazilNutUoR-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4707\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brazil nuts used in teaching at UoR<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The shape of a brazil nut brings to mind two adhering segments of chocolate orange and there is good reason for this.\u00a0 The individual brazil is one of many segments formed inside a hard outer case.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4704\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4704\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-day-17-a-tough-nut-to-crack\/brazilnut638972_1280\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4704\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4704\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2017\/12\/brazilnut638972_1280-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4704\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shelled brazils<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To botanists the brazil is known as <em>Bertholletia excelsa,<\/em> a large tree (to 50m) naturally occurring in rainforest throughout Brazil, the Guianas and Venezuela, and in eastern Bolivia, Colombia and Peru.\u00a0 It is an offence to fell brazil trees in Brazil due to their importance and the lack of ways to artificially propagate them. One of the fascinating interactions of the brazil is that with the Agouti which can chew through the hard shell of the fruit to release the seeds inside.\u00a0 This is captured beautifully in a extract from The Private Life of Plants featuring David Attenborough, a series I was lucky enough to be involved with.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Agouti and the Brazil Nut\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HE6XUcq4g38?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The need for Agouti is not the only close link with animals that the brazil tree has; its flowers are pollinated by female Euglossine bees whose males pollinate a particular orchid, so the brazil tree needs the orchid to be in the vicinity <a href=\"http:\/\/mymultiplesclerosis.co.uk\/aww\/agouti-brazil-nut-tree-orchid-bee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">if it is to be pollinated<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bertholletia<\/em> is a member of the Lecythidaceae, a plant family including many tropical plants, some with extraordinary flowers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4705\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4705\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-day-17-a-tough-nut-to-crack\/fl2728447_1280brazilnut\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4705\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4705\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2017\/12\/fl2728447_1280BrazilNut-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4705\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Bertholletia excelsa<\/i> in flower.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The story of the brazil is therefore one of complex interactions between plant, animals and environment.\u00a0 There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/thebrazilnutstory.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wonderful wordpress site<\/a> devoted to the brazil where you can read a much fuller story of this wonderful nut.
