{"id":5143,"date":"2018-12-05T15:09:45","date_gmt":"2018-12-05T15:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/?p=5143"},"modified":"2018-12-05T15:09:45","modified_gmt":"2018-12-05T15:09:45","slug":"adventbotany-2018-day-5-winterberry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/2018\/12\/05\/adventbotany-2018-day-5-winterberry\/","title":{"rendered":"#AdventBotany 2018, Day 5 &#8211; Winterberry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-2018-day-5-winterberry\/c2006-derek-ramsey\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5150\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2018\/12\/AmericanWinterberryIlexverticillataWinterRedw-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Winterberry (C)2006, Derek Ramsey\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Europeans are familiar with the evergreen holly, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/2014-botanical-advent-calendar-day-3-ilex\/\"><em>Ilex aquifolium<\/em><\/a>, that is used as a midwinter decoration because it is evergreen and shows the promise of new life and growth in the spring.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also prized for its red berries.\u00a0 However, not all <em>Ilex<\/em> species are evergreen, one of the midwinter decorations in North America is the winterberry or <em>Ilex verticillata<\/em>, and this has stunning red berries on bare stems.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n<p>Winterberry is a holly of eastern north america and is much more cold tolerant than it&#8217;s more traditionally used evergreen relatives, <em>Ilex aquifolium<\/em> and <em>Ilex opaca<\/em> (see maps) which are intolerant of very low temperatures.\u00a0 It arguably has a much greater visual impact than evergreen holly because the berries are not hidden by leaves.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5152\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5152\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-2018-day-5-winterberry\/38084173104_ad1d544fb4_kw\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5152\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5152\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2018\/12\/38084173104_ad1d544fb4_kw-1024x666.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"416\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Ilex verticillata<\/em> in a meadow at State Game Land 133, Lycoming County.
