But what about Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer? <\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5171\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5171\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-2018-day-7-reindeer-games\/magicrainbowfood\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5171\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5171\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2018\/12\/MagicRainbowFood-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Magic Reindeer Food (Image \u00a9 Personal Creations, licensed under CC BY-NC 2.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In recent years there\u2019s been a trend in crafty circles for making \u201cmagic reindeer food\u201d designed to be sprinkled outdoors, most often made from a combination of oats and glitter. The idea is that the glitter will sparkle in the dark and lead the reindeer to your house, and the oats will give them something to eat when they arrive. And while reindeer can eat oats, as can hedgehogs and some garden birds, plastic based glitter can cause real harm to wildlife. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rspb.org.uk\/about-the-rspb\/about-us\/media-centre\/press-releases\/glittersnotgoldforwildlife\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to the RSPB, even edible glitter isn\u2019t ideal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So if \u201cmagical reindeer food\u201d isn\u2019t a good idea\u2026 what do reindeer actually eat? Well, they do enjoy carrots and apples as a special treat, but that\u2019s still pretty far removed from the diet they\u2019d be enjoying in the wild.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As we know, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/advent-botany-2015-day-9-reindeer-moss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they do eat <em>Cladonia rangiferina<\/em> and <em>Cladonia portentosa<\/em> &#8211; both known as reindeer moss or reindeer lichens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and these are a staple of their diet during the Arctic winter. Throughout the year, when the tundra isn\u2019t covered with snow, reindeer eat sedges and grasses. Forest-dwelling reindeer (such as those in Finland, pictured below) also eat the leaves of willow and birch trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5173\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/adventbotany-2018-day-7-reindeer-games\/reindeergrazing\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5173\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5173\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.reading.ac.uk\/crg\/files\/2018\/12\/Reindeergrazing-1024x711.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"416\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reindeer grazing alongside the Kitkajoki river, Finland<br \/> (Image \u00a9 Johannes Staffans, licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 2.0.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2017, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/umu.diva-portal.org\/smash\/record.jsf?pid=diva2%3A1159520&amp;dswid=4667\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dagmar D. Egelkraut, of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ume\u00e5 University in Sweden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> discovered that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cReindeer can have strong effects on the plant species composition and functioning of tundra ecosystems, and often promote a transition towards a graminoid-dominated vegetation type. As a result, they influence many ecological processes, such as nutrient dynamics, soil biotic composition and functioning, and carbon storage.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This hasn\u2019t yet been studied over a long timescale, but it appears as though when reindeer return over time to historic milking grounds, various factors contribute to effect a shift in the environment away from shrubs, mosses and heathland, with grasslands taking over. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Researchers at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ume\u00e5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> University also discovered that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umu.se\/en\/news\/reindeer-grazing-protects-tundra-plant-diversity-in-a-warming-climate_5813785\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reindeer grazing protects tundra plant diversity in a warming climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As the reindeer graze away the larger plants they increase light availability at ground level, which allows smaller and slower-growing species to flourish. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So not only are reindeer experts at navigating Santa&#8217;s sleigh around the world, they can also teach us important lessons about the functioning of ecosystems thanks to the careful study of their impact on the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Editor&#8217;s Note<\/h2>\n<p>A major part of reindeer diet is reported to be two tundra plants:\u00a0<em class=\"EmphasisTypeItalic \">Luzula confusa<\/em>\u00a0and<em class=\"EmphasisTypeItalic \">\u00a0Salix polaris<\/em>, both plants that grow fast after snow melt in spring (Van der Wal et al. 2000). Summer grazing included a much wider variety of species including\u00a0<em>Oxyria digyna<\/em> and <em>Pedicularis<\/em> spp. based on pollen analysis of reindeer faeces (Bjune, 2000).<\/p>\n\n<p>You are not likely to find these plants in your back garden but you might find some relatives.\u00a0 In Britain you might easily find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brc.ac.uk\/plantatlas\/plant\/luzula-campestris\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Luzula campestris<\/em><\/a> (Field woodrush), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brc.ac.uk\/plantatlas\/plant\/salix-caprea\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Salix caprea<\/em><\/a> (Goat willow), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brc.ac.uk\/plantatlas\/plant\/pedicularis-sylvatica\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Pedicularis sylvatica<\/em><\/a> (Lousewort) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brc.ac.uk\/plantatlas\/plant\/rumex-acetosa\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Rumex acetosa<\/em><\/a> (Common sorrel).\u00a0 Rather than buy oats with glitter to seed your visitng reindeer, how about taking a walk in the countryside or a park and see if you can find something a bit more authentic for your reindeer? Don&#8217;t worry you CAN pick leaves and flowers without breaking the law (see the excellent web page from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plantlife.org.uk\/uk\/discover-wild-plants-nature\/picking-wildflowers-and-the-law\" class=\"broken_link\">Plantlife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Contrary to widespread belief, it is not illegal to pick most wildflowers for personal, non-commercial use.
