\"\"<\/a>Today\u2019s advent botany blog will focus on a popular seasonal ornamental, Amaryllis, with its vibrant colouration ranging from pink, to purple and occasionally red.<\/p>\n

Etymologically, the name Amaryllis (\u0391\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03c5\u03bb\u03bb\u03af\u03c2) is derived from ancient Greek verb \u1f00\u03bc\u03b1\u03c1\u03cd\u03c3\u03c3\u03c9 which broadly translates as \u201cI sparkle\u201d. As we have seen in several past blogs, there are many connections between botany and mythology as it seems the ancient Greeks had a fondness for plants. We re-direct our interested reader to our past entries for the almond tree, and olives for examples.<\/p>\n

The story of Amaryllis is probably as old as time\u2026 Girl meets boy, goes to an Oracle, does something questionable, lives happily ever after. You can be the judge\u2026<\/p>\n

Once upon a time there was a beautiful woman called Amaryllis \u2013 beauty often being a prerequisite in mythological adventures. And to add to this, there was also a handsome man that managed to catch the eye of beautiful Amaryllis. And she was not alone in her admiration of his pretty face, it seems that most of the young ladies in the village were madly in love with him. Unfortunately for Amaryllis and all the other ladies in town, that particular man was too keen a botanist to notice. So to win his heart he set out a competition (another firm favourite of mythological matchmaking \u2013 A competition – it\u2019s a little bit like \u201cThe bachelor- Ancient Greece edition\u201d). Towards this he asked them all to bring a beautiful flower, and the one who would bring him the most beautiful, and unknown to him, flower will win his heart.<\/p>\n

Amaryllis, who was not joking around and was in it to win it, decided to do this properly and went all the way to the Oracle at Delphi for advice. For those of you that do not know, the Oracle often gave confusing advice, and more often than not people took their lives into their own hands when they tried to interpret what the Oracle said. Some more cunning sources may suggest that that was the whole point of the Oracle \u2013 provide ambiguous advice so that they are never technically wrong –\u00a0 but as it is Christmas we will ignore that tiny little detail. Back to Amaryllis and her trip to the Oracle, they advised her to pierce her heart every day and walk (while bleeding might we add, isn\u2019t that delightful\u2026) to the house of the young man. She thought \u201csounds like a good idea\u201d and for 29 days did just that. We told you her decisions were questionable. Luckily, on 30th<\/sup> she noticed a beautiful sparkling flower on her path. And now we enter \u201cquestionable decision number 2\u201d where Amaryllis cut the flower\u00a0 and presented it to the young man who fell madly in love with her. And they lived happily ever after. Since Amaryllis decided it would be a good idea to just cut an unknown flower, we have some indication that she is not to be trusted. And with good reason. As with many members in the Amaryllidaceae, there are some highly toxic compounds produced, especially in the bulbs. Every now and again we read tragic stories of people who poisoned themselves by mistaking onions with, for example, daffodil bulbs. Therefore, reader beware, as spectacular as Amaryllis is, it is not to be trusted as an addition to your salad.<\/p>\n\n

The genus today called Amaryllis <\/em>L. is named after our beautiful but careless heroine, and it is not in any way related to the flower that grew on her path. Linnaeus included species from South Africa and the Americas in his genus Amaryllis<\/em> L. but the American species were later separated to the genus Hippeastrum<\/em> Herb.\u00a0 Neither would have been known in ancient Greece.\u00a0 It\u2019s more likely the blood red flower was Anemone coronaria<\/em> L, another Linnean plant entirely!<\/p>\n
