2021 &#8211; Day 1 &#8211; <i>Plumbago auriculata<\/i>, the cape leadwort"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>By Alastair Culham<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5972\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/dictionnaireuniv16orbi_0187Plumbago_capensis-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Previous #AdventBotany blogs have been a fairly passive read but this year I&#8217;m throwing you a challenge.\u00a0 Some of the blogs will feature a plant mentioned in a book that has the word Christmas in the title or is at least Christmas themed.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s blog features<em> Plumbago<\/em>, the first plant to be mentioned in a particular novel based around Christmas.\u00a0 I hope you enjoy reading about <em>Plumbago<\/em>, a plant I have a particular affection for, but that you will also Tweet me to tell me the book for which this is the first plant mentioned in chapter 1.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>It&#8217;s all about Plumbum<\/h3>\n<p>This scrambling shrub is native to Southern Africa but is grown widely as an ornamental, including as a houseplant in cool temperate areas and has naturalised in places with suitable climate (Ventosa-Febles, 2020).\u00a0 It&#8217;s often known as the &#8216;cape leadwort&#8217;, and those of you with a knowledge of chemistry will recognise that &#8216;Plumbago&#8217;, like &#8216;leadwort&#8217; also refers to lead &#8211; plumbum.\u00a0 Those of you with a childish sense of humour were probably just as amused as I was when my school teacher had to explain why lead had the symbol Pb.\u00a0 Plumbum may well sound like the after effects of too much Christmas pudding but that is not the main thrust of this story.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5969\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5969\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5969 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/https-__www.cabi_.org_isc_distribution_map-1024x674.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/https-__www.cabi_.org_isc_distribution_map-1024x674.png 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/https-__www.cabi_.org_isc_distribution_map-300x198.png 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/https-__www.cabi_.org_isc_distribution_map-768x506.png 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/https-__www.cabi_.org_isc_distribution_map.png 1054w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5969\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Native and introduced distribution of <i>Plumbago auriculata<\/i> <small>(from CABI.org)<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Family and relations<\/h3>\n<p>Plumbaginaceae, the family that includes <em>Plumbago<\/em>, currently includes over 1100 species (of which about 600 are <em>Limonium<\/em>, &gt;300 are <em>Acantholimon,<\/em> 98 are <em>Armeria<\/em>, and just over 20 are <em>Plumbago<\/em>), many are tolerant of drought, saline or cold conditions.\u00a0 Challenging habitats are common in members of this order of plants, the Caryophyllales.\u00a0 <em>Plumbago auriculata<\/em> (often known as <em>P. capensis<\/em>) is perhaps the most widely cultivated and is grown for its masses of pale blue flowers that are produced over a long period.\u00a0 It is a well known plant in South Africa from where it originates.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5968\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5968\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5968 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/Flowers_of_plumbago_auriculata_and_lagerstroemia_indica_in_Kitano-cho_Kobe_redux.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/Flowers_of_plumbago_auriculata_and_lagerstroemia_indica_in_Kitano-cho_Kobe_redux.jpg 660w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/Flowers_of_plumbago_auriculata_and_lagerstroemia_indica_in_Kitano-cho_Kobe_redux-258x300.jpg 258w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5968\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Plumbago auriculata<\/i> growing outside as a garden plant (Cropped image from \u305d\u3089\u307f\u307f, CC BY-SA 4.0 &lt;https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0&gt;, via Wikimedia Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Length isn&#8217;t everything<\/h3>\n<p>Many plants, and <em>Plumabgo<\/em> is one, are hermaphrodite, so they bear both male and female reproductive organs.\u00a0 This leads to the challenge posed by inadvertent inbreeding.\u00a0 So, like the british primrose (<em>Primula vulgaris<\/em>), cape leadwort shows heterostyly to encourage outbreeding (the transfer of pollen from one individual to another). Heterostyly is a situation where flowers of different plants have different lengths of style (the female reproductive structure) and often differing lengths of stamen (male reproductive structure).\u00a0 Ferrero et al. Scale bar = 10 mm. <small>(Ferrero et al. 2009)<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Naphthaquinones and other bioactive compounds<\/h3>\n<p><em>Plumbago<\/em> contains the highly bioactive compound Plumbagin, a naphthaquinone, named after the plant genus.\u00a0 In a review of <em>Plumbago<\/em>, Singh et al.
