as morning glory (<em>Ipomoea tricolour<\/em> Cav.).\u00a0 The second plant mentioned in this Christmas book is described as &#8216;clinging&#8217;, and the alternative blue convolvulus is <em>Convolvulus sabatius<\/em> Viv. which sprawls but does not cling.\u00a0 Such indirect pieces of information can be crucial in identifying a plant but can be very difficult to teach in ID classes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;Heavenly Blue&#8217; and &#8216;Flying Saucers&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>The morning glory is a widely planted garden ornamental with a range of cultivars.\u00a0 <em>I. tricolor<\/em> is grown for the stunningly intense blue flowers produced in profusion through the growing season (mid to late summer in the UK but all year round in warm regions).\u00a0 Remarkably the cause of the blue colour was not worked out until 1995 when a paper by Yoshida in Nature explained the chemistry (Figure 1).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5987\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5987\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5987\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/HeavenlyBlue_nature-858x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/HeavenlyBlue_nature-858x1024.jpg 858w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/HeavenlyBlue_nature-251x300.jpg 251w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/HeavenlyBlue_nature-768x916.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/HeavenlyBlue_nature.jpg 928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Figure 1, a, Blue blooming flower (right) and the bud (left) of<br \/><i>Ipomoea tricolor<\/i> cv. heavenly blue. b, Structure of heavenly<br \/>blue anthocyanin (HBA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Pumping ion<\/h3>\n<p>The paper demonstrated that the blue was due to a rise in the cellular pH causing the purple bud pigmet to change to blue.\u00a0 This is a similar situation to using red cabbage extract as a pH indicator (Compound Interest, 2017) which I&#8217;ve done many times on field courses.\u00a0 Basically the anthocyanin, in this case a form of peonidin called &#8220;3-0-(2-0-(6-0-(<span id=\"MathJax-Element-3-Frame\" class=\"MathJax_SVG\" role=\"presentation\" data-mathml=\"&lt;math xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML&quot;&gt;&lt;mtext&gt;trans&lt;\/mtext&gt;&lt;\/math&gt;\"><\/span>trans-3-0-(\u03b2-D-glucopyranosyl)caffeyl)-\u03b2-D-glucopyranosyl)-6-0 -(trans<span id=\"MathJax-Element-4-Frame\" class=\"MathJax_SVG\" role=\"presentation\" data-mathml=\"&lt;math xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML&quot;&gt;&lt;mtext&gt;trans&lt;\/mtext&gt;&lt;\/math&gt;\"><\/span>-4-0-(6-0-(trans<span id=\"MathJax-Element-5-Frame\" class=\"MathJax_SVG\" role=\"presentation\" data-mathml=\"&lt;math xmlns=&quot;http:\/\/www.w3.org\/1998\/Math\/MathML&quot;&gt;&lt;mtext&gt;trans&lt;\/mtext&gt;&lt;\/math&gt;\"><\/span>-3-0-(\u03b2-D-glucopyranosyl)caffeyl)-\u03b2-D-gluco-pyranosyl)caffeyl)-\u03b2-D-glucopyranosyl)-5-0-(\u03b2-D-glucopyranosyl)peonidin&#8221;
