{"id":5994,"date":"2021-12-03T23:36:44","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T23:36:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/?p=5994"},"modified":"2021-12-03T23:59:11","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T23:59:11","slug":"adventbotany-2021-day-3-rosa-paul-noel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/2021\/12\/03\/adventbotany-2021-day-3-rosa-paul-noel\/","title":{"rendered":"#AdventBotany &#8211; 2021 &#8211; Day 3 &#8211; <i>Rosa<\/i> &#8216;Paul No\u00ebl&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>By <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BotanyRNG\">Alastair Culham<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesrosesduchemin.com\/2019\/12\/paul-noel.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5995\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/ob_eb11a0_paul-noel-wich-l-hay-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The third plant mentioned in our mystery Christmas entitled book is the rose.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve chosen &#8216;Paul No\u00ebl&#8217; as the most appropriately named cultivar for an Advent blog although our literary character is described in a way that perhaps does not conjure the image of a pale pink rambler &#8211;\u00a0 <em>&#8220;She should have been on a balcony, a rose between her lips&#8230;&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Rosa &#8216;Paul No\u00ebl&#8217; is a rambling rose with spines and pale pink flowers.\u00a0 I&#8217;m claiming this is the only rose cultivar with No\u00ebl in it&#8217;s name but I&#8217;m looking out for a cultivar that includes Christmas.\u00a0 (Please don&#8217;t say Christmas rose &#8211; that&#8217;s a hellebore!)<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps I should have chosen &#8216;Deep Secret&#8217;, while you work out the novel, because it is a dark red, highly scented tea rose with only a few prickles. Much more suited to grasping in the mouth.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Some hybrids of <em class=\"text-italics\">R. wichuraiana<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>In 1891 <em>R. wichuraiana<\/em> arrived in Europe from Japan (Stuart Thomas, 1983).\u00a0 This prostrate, semi-evergreen, rose produces masses of white, highly scented, flowers from August onwards.\u00a0 It has few thorns which made it even more gardenworthy.\u00a0 From the early 1900s <em>R. wichuraiana<\/em> was used in breeding programmes that yielded a wide range of cold tolerant and free flowering climbing roses, particularly &#8216;Dorothy Perkins&#8217; and &#8216;Alb\u00e9ric Barbier&#8217;.\u00a0 Less well known but still widely sold is &#8216;Paul No\u00ebl&#8217;, a hybrid with Rosa <span class=\"\" dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u2018Monsieur <span class=\"highlight selected appended\">Tillier<\/span>\u2019 (bred by Bernaix in 1891; Quest-Ritson, 2015)<\/span>. <em>R. wichuraiana<\/em> is now treated as a form of <em>Rosa luciae<\/em> (see Gordon Rowley&#8217;s account in Thomas, 1978) but the name persists widely in rose literature.<\/p>\n<h3>The birth of &#8216;Paul No\u00ebl&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>The January 1911 edition of Journal des Roses reports on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biodiversitylibrary.org\/page\/9595745\" class=\"broken_link\">page 6<\/a> that a M Tanne had presented two new hybrids of <em>R. wichuraiana<\/em> at the Rouen horticultural exhibition in July 1910, namely &#8216;Doctor Henri Neuprez&#8217; and &#8216;Paul No\u00ebl&#8217;.
