Day 7 &#8211; <b>Ives<\/b> has no names"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>By Alastair Culham<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mojavedesert.net\/people\/ives\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6028 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/380-ives-photo392--150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Joseph Christmas Ives is perhaps best known for his exploration of the Colorado River published as <em>Report upon the Colorado River of the West explored in 1857 and 1858<\/em> (Ives &amp; Humphreys, 1861).\u00a0 Born on 25th December 1828, which might go some way to explaining his middle name and the choice of this #AdventBotany topic, he was an engineer, soldier and explorer (Crompton, 1999).\u00a0 He is perhaps less well known for being the first person to cross the isthmus of Panama with a steamship, crossing in 1857, some 57 years before the Panama Canal was completed in 1914 (Ashworth, 2020)!\u00a0 To discover how he achieved this you might have a look at Ashworth&#8217;s blog.\u00a0 All that aside, this blog is about botany and Ives is one of the select people with a &#8216;Standard form&#8217; (Ives) 10 (-11) (1861).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In each case it is the very well known botanist <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asa_Gray\">Asa Gray<\/a> who has provided the descriptions and names and Ives&#8217; report in which they have been published.<\/p>\n<h3>Eponymy<\/h3>\n<p>The genus <em>Ivesia<\/em> (Rosaceae) was published in 1858, surely that celebrates this successful expedition? Sadly a dip in to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sil.si.edu\/DigitalCollections\/tl-2\/browse.cfm?vol=2#page\/418\">TL-2 tells us<\/a> that this was named after Eli Ives, a botanist and physician, so no luck there either.<\/p>\n<h3>Memories of Ives<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6035\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6035\" style=\"width: 222px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6035\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/herbarium\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2021\/12\/Sophorastenophylla.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"295\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6035\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Sophora stenophylla<\/i> A.Gray<br \/><small>(https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/arch\/learn\/nature\/fabaceae_sophora_stenophylla.htm)<\/small><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So, we are left with the rather pretty <em>Sophora stenophylla<\/em> as a botanical memory of this great expedition and the unusual situation that Ives has a standard form name but has actually published no new taxa.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly Ives achieved a huge amount outside botany and he does have an entry in TL-2 which is recognition in its own right.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>References<\/h3>\n<p>Ashworth, Jr., W.B. 2020.
