ECR Communication Skills Development Workshop

INFORM will be hosting a two-day residential Early Career Researchers (ECR) Personal Development Workshop which will focus on Communication Skills.

The workshop will take place on May 20th and 21st, 2025, at the University of Reading’s Henley Business School, located at the Greenlands campus in Henley-on-Thames, Berkshire.

The workshop aims to:

  • Build Confidence:  Learn to recognise and implement strategies that help manage feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, and inadequacy, fostering more authentic communication.
  • Understand Audiences:  Gain insights into the characteristics and needs of diverse audiences to develop targeted and effective communication strategies.
  • Communicate Effectively:  Adapt complex topics and information to ensure clarity and understanding across various stakeholder groups.


Workshop Themes:

  • Day 1: Breaking Down Communication Barriers
  • Day 2: Communicating with Different Stakeholders

Workshop sessions will be conducted by university academics, external speakers, industry professionals, the University of Reading’s People Development Team, and the Doctoral Researcher College. Sessions will include presenting techniques, understanding imposter syndrome, stakeholder/audience mapping, developing a comms plan, communicating with industry, and storytelling for researchers.

The event is free to attend with overnight accommodation and all meals also provided. Participants will be responsible for their travel expenses and any incidental costs incurred.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be eligible to apply to attend this workshop applicants should:

  • Be a registered INFORM Hub Member (you can sign up HERE)
  • Identify as an ECR (within eight years of their PhD award/equivalent professional training, or within six years of their first academic appointment)
  • Be affiliated with a Research institution in the UK
  • Be based in the UK
