These issues are closely linked to age-related declines in gut microbiota diversity, chronic low-grade inflammation (\u201cinflammageing\u201d), and poor nutritional status. Emerging evidence shows that the gut\u2013brain axis plays an important role in mental wellbeing, yet few human trials have examined whether improving gut health can directly benefit mental health outcomes.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"820\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"1020\"><strong>Project Aims:\u00a0 <\/strong>The GutFood feasibility study aims to evaluate whether a novel functional drink enriched with inulin\u2014either alone or combined with folate-related B-vitamins\u2014can improve:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1340\">\n<li data-start=\"1022\" data-end=\"1070\">\n<p data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1070\"><strong data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1068\">Gut microbiota diversity and composition<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1071\" data-end=\"1102\">\n<p data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1102\"><strong data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1102\">Gastrointestinal function<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1103\" data-end=\"1125\">\n<p data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1125\"><strong data-start=\"1105\" data-end=\"1125\">B-vitamin status<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1181\">\n<p data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1181\"><strong data-start=\"1128\" data-end=\"1181\">Inflammatory markers linked to poor mental health<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1182\" data-end=\"1293\">\n<p data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1293\"><strong data-start=\"1184\" data-end=\"1210\">Mental health outcomes<\/strong>, including symptoms of depression, anxiety, sleep quality, and overall wellbeing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1294\" data-end=\"1340\">\n<p data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1340\"><strong data-start=\"1296\" data-end=\"1321\">Product acceptability<\/strong> among older adults<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1342\" data-end=\"1532\">The study will involve a 12-week randomised controlled trial in 84 older adults to determine whether inulin and B-vitamins have complementary or synergistic effects on gut and mental health.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1534\" data-end=\"1537\" \/>\n<p data-start=\"1564\" data-end=\"1640\"><strong>Potential Impact:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2511\">The project offers significant scientific, public health, and commercial value. It will deepen understanding of how prebiotics and B-vitamins affect the gut microbiome, inflammation, and mental health in older adults, while addressing the need for safe, nutrition-based approaches to support wellbeing in an ageing population.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2511\">The findings will inform the development of new functional food products, aiding commercialisation opportunities for industry partners.
