This project targets the urgent and growing problem of adolescent depression<\/strong>, a condition for which existing treatments\u2014psychotherapy and medication\u2014are often insufficient or only minimally effective. Given the rising global prevalence and limited treatment response, there is a critical need for new, accessible, and biologically informed approaches that can support mental health in young people.<\/p>\n Project Aims:<\/strong><\/p>\n This project aims to:<\/p>\n Test whether probiotic supplementation can reduce depressive symptoms<\/strong> in adolescents diagnosed with major depressive disorder.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Examine changes in gut microbiome composition<\/strong> and explore how probiotics may influence mental health via the gut\u2013brain\u2013immune axis.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Determine whether effects differ<\/strong> between adolescents receiving no active treatment and those currently on antidepressant medication.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Use a fully online\/postal, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover design<\/strong> to maximise participation and feasibility.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n This research represents the first clinical test<\/strong> of probiotics as a potential adjunctive approach for adolescent depression.<\/p>\n This project could deliver significant scientific, clinical, and commercial benefits by providing the first evidence of probiotic effects in adolescent depression and deepening understanding of gut\u2013brain mechanisms. It may guide the development of new adjunctive treatments, strengthen academic\u2013industry innovation, and lay a strong foundation for larger clinical trials and future funding.<\/p>\n The project will commence in January 2026.<\/p>\n
