{"id":95,"date":"2017-11-23T19:25:47","date_gmt":"2017-11-23T19:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/landsurfaceprocesses\/?page_id=95"},"modified":"2025-02-24T18:40:26","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T18:40:26","slug":"jules-4-9-animations","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/landsurfaceprocesses\/software-examples\/jules-4-9-animations\/","title":{"rendered":"JULES 4.9 Global Animations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Sample JULES4.9 <i>Global<\/i> Land Surface Processes Simulation <\/b><br \/>\n(by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.met.reading.ac.uk\/userpages\/gn916173.php\">Patrick McGuire<\/a>, Pier Luigi Vidale, Alberto Martinez de la Torre and Grenville Lister)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.personal.reading.ac.uk\/~gn916173\/precip_GL1979-1989.gif\">Monthly Average Precipitation (1979-1989), used as one of the WFDEI driving factors<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.personal.reading.ac.uk\/~gn916173\/smc_GL1979-2012_v2.mp4\" rel=\"noopener\">Monthly Average Total Soil Moisture (1979-2012), one of the outputs of the JULES simulation (MP4 version)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.personal.reading.ac.uk\/~gn916173\/npp_GL1979-1989.gif\" rel=\"noopener\">Monthly Average Net Primary Productivity (NPP) (1979-1989), one of the outputs of the JULES simulation<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.personal.reading.ac.uk\/~gn916173\/smc_anom_GL1979-2012_v2.mp4\" rel=\"noopener\">Anomaly of Monthly Average Total Soil Moisture (1979-2012), computed from the JULES output with CDO (MP4 version)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These animations were produced from the Rose\/Cylc suite <a href=\"https:\/\/code.metoffice.gov.uk\/trac\/roses-u\/browser\/a\/s\/0\/5\/2\/\">u-as052<\/a> with JULES4.9 (with 0.5 hour time steps) that dumped the data to disk every 6 hours of simulation calendar time (with the 2D variables saved as 1D with an ocean mask) , by using:<br \/>\ni) a <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/landsurfaceprocesses\/software-examples\/code-samples\/monthly-averaging-script\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSH script<\/a>\u00a0that uses CDO to do the monthly averaging for the 11 year (or 34 year) data set, which creates a new NETCDF file;<br \/>\nii) a Python script (i.e., for <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/landsurfaceprocesses\/software-examples\/code-samples\/smc_13levels_global2-py\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soil moisture<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/landsurfaceprocesses\/software-examples\/code-samples\/smc_anom_6levels_global-py\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anomaly of soil moisture<\/a>), that uses the new monthly-averages 1D NETCDF file and saves the PNG animation frames to disk (These Python scripts were adapted\u00a0from Emma Robinson&#8217;s data visualization script); and<br \/>\niii) this ImageMagick command to merge the PNG frames into an animated GIF:<br \/>\n<i>convert -set delay 0 -colors 256 -dispose 1 -loop 1 precip*.png precip_GL1979-2012.gif<br \/>\n<\/i>iv) this ffmpeg command to convert the animated gif to an MP4:<i><br \/>\n<\/i><em>~\/ffmpeg\/bin\/ffmpeg -i smc_anom_GL1979-2012_v2.gif -movflags faststart -pix_fmt yuv420p -vf &#8220;scale=trunc(iw\/2)*2:trunc(ih\/2)*2&#8221; smc_anom_GL1979-2012_v2.mp4<br \/>\n<\/em>v) for the animation of the anomaly of soil moisture, this <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/landsurfaceprocesses\/software-examples\/code-samples\/anomaly_1979_2012-scr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CSH script<\/a> was used to compute the anomaly with CDO operators.<\/p>\n<p>Compare these global animations to our previous <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/landsurfaceprocesses\/software-examples\/jules4-7-animations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northern Hemisphere animations<\/a>.
