In May 2025, we held a training session for PhD students on ‘How to Publish in Latin American Studies’. The session was led by two expert speakers who are current journal editors. Our external speaker was Dr Juan Pablo Ferrero, the co-ordinating editor of the Bulletin of Latin American Research (BLAR), a peer-reviewed journal that covers all academic disciplines within the Social Sciences and Humanities. We were also fortunate to be joined by Prof Angelique Chettiparamb, Managing Editor of the journal Planning Theory, who offered her expert view. The session covered key essentials to help PhD students navigate the academic publishing process, offering a ‘behind the scenes’ glimpse into academic publishing and a ‘step-by-step’ outline of peer review.
