Workshop participants mapping their research and showing cumulative knowledge

On 6 November 2025, R-LAC hosted an interdisciplinary workshop bringing together colleagues from Real Estate and Planning, Architecture, Meteorology, and Geography. The session focused on rethinking development and climate challenges in Latin America through the lens of the pluriverse, a concept advocating for “a world where many worlds fit.”

Discussions highlighted:

  • Alternative Development Paradigms such as Buen Vivir, rooted in Indigenous philosophies prioritising ecology and social justice over economic growth.
  • Land and Governance: contrasting Western property models with collective territorial approaches, and exploring tools like Community Land Trusts.
  • Climate Change Impacts: from glacier retreat in Peru to hurricane risks in Mexico, and the social implications of renewable energy transitions.
  • Knowledge Integration: valuing local and Indigenous knowledge alongside scientific data to inform policy and planning.

The workshop concluded with exciting ideas for future collaborations, including:

  • Mapping climate vulnerability and land governance in indigenous territories.
  • Investigating social justice in renewable energy projects.
  • Developing participatory tools to visualise climate scenarios and community adaptation strategies.
