Expertise I am a Professor in Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics at the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences (FNS), and the Deputy Director for the Institute for Food, Nutrition, and Health (IFNH), University of Reading (UoR), UK, with extensive expertise in conducting large epidemiological studies in various populations. I lead the GeNuIne (Gene-Nutrient Interactions) Collaboration which focuses on investigating the impact of genetic, social and environmental factors on obesity and related disease outcomes in lower-middle-income countries and also the study co-ordinator of D-Cardia, a large international collaborative study with data on ~2 million participants.

About me:  Professor Vimal Karani is a Professor in Nutrigenetics & Nutrigenomics at the University of Reading, UK. He is Scientific Advisory Board member of the Scottish Government, Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture (ENRA) and the Deputy Director of Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health, which is the hub for interdisciplinary research in food, nutrition, and health at Reading, UK. He joined the University of Reading after his post-doctoral training at the MRC Epidemiology unit (Cambridge, UK) and the University College London (London, UK). He has received advanced training in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London, UK. Professor Karani has published extensively in areas related to nutrigenetics and non-communicable diseases and presently has more than 110 peer reviewed publications and book chapters. He has received significant global media attention for his work on nutrition, lifestyle and cardiometabolic diseases. He won the UK Nutrition Society’s Silver Medal award for the year 2020 for his contribution to the world of global nutrition and the UK-Malaysia Education Institutional Partnership award 2023 for delivering a significant impact at the regional level and for showing significant value-creation to the education sector in Malaysia and the UK.
