(You can revisit that first meeting<a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/lemontree-energy-partitioning-workshop-advancing-plant-pigment-research-for-better-earth-monitoring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Back then, we promised to meet up again in a year\u2014and at the end of September 2025, we did just that. Photo by Sophia Cain (University of Reading).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The invitation captured the aim:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA deeper understanding of primary production can be gained by closely examining leaf pigments, their role in photosynthesis, and their presence in data collected by existing and upcoming Earth Observation satellites.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Building on our 2024 workshop, this second meeting focused on non-photochemical processes, evaluating and comparing hybrid models, and identifying the measurements needed to improve model\u2013satellite cross-evaluation.<\/p>\n<h2>Day 1 \u2013 Recap and Aims<\/h2>\n<p>The workshop opened with <strong>Catherine Morfopoulos<\/strong> outlining the goals.<\/p>\n<p>We then heard three perspectives on linking photosynthesis to ecosystem-scale processes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Lisa Wingate<\/strong> spoke on <em>\u201cIsotopic processes in plants and ecosystems and phenocams\u201d<\/em>, highlighting how belowground communities can be linked to remotely sensed inputs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lina Mercado<\/strong> shared insights from her work in the Andes, in <em>\u201cPhotosynthesis along tropical elevation gradient\u201d<\/em>, exploring how elevation and temperature shape photosynthetic dynamics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Youngryel Ryu<\/strong> (LEMONTREE PI) presented on <em>\u201cIntegrating remote sensing into ecosystem modelling\u201d<\/em>, showing how observational and modelling approaches can be brought together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The day ended with breakout groups, mixing disciplines to identify the \u201cbig challenges\u201d around solar-induced fluorescence (SIF) and reporting back on shared priorities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Day 2 \u2013 Models, data, and challenges<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2661 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/10\/SIF-photo-2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/10\/SIF-photo-2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/10\/SIF-photo-2.jpg 702w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/>Day 2 featured a series of talks focused on linking SIF with flux networks and modelling:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Remi Luo<\/strong>: <em>\u201cTerrestrial ecosystem function through remote sensing and flux networks\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Haoran Liu<\/strong>: <em>\u201cSIF-MIP\u201d<\/em>, comparing existing SIF models.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fabienne Maignan<\/strong>: <em>\u201cSIF in ORCHIDEE\u201d<\/em>, showing how fluorescence is integrated into the land surface model<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The group then tackled three central questions: <em>What do we know? What do we need? What experiments could help us move forward? <\/em>The group came back together to share their thoughts before beginning to sketch a roadmap for next steps.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Day 3 \u2013 Synthesis and next steps<\/h2>\n<p>The final day was devoted to synthesis. A plenary session debated whether a review paper was needed to summarise the state of knowledge on energy partitioning and photosynthesis. The answer was unanimous: yes.<\/p>\n<p>We then split into two groups:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Leaf-level processes<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ecosystem and canopy-scale processes<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each group asked those three questions again: <em>What do we know? What do we need? What experiments could help us move forward?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This structured reflection brought clarity to what\u2019s missing and how we can work together to fill those gaps.<\/p>\n<h2>Outcomes<\/h2>\n<p>From this workshop, we committed to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Drafting a review paper on energy partitioning and photosynthesis<\/li>\n<li>Advancing the hybrid model intercomparison project<\/li>\n<li>Finalising our list of missing observables and the experiments needed to better constrain satellite data and test models<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>A sunny conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2660 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/10\/SIF-photo-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"321\" height=\"430\" \/>The week before, our LEMONTREE colleagues Colin, Sandy, and Sophia had run another Dartington workshop\u2014during a week of constant rain. Thankfully, the September sun returned for this meeting, allowing us to enjoy both the productive discussions indoors and the beautiful Devon surroundings outside.
