From graduations and new faces to workshops, conferences and a bumper crop of papers \u2014 2025 has been busy, brilliant, and very collaborative.<\/p>\n<h2>Early Career Researcher News<\/h2>\n<p>Congratulations to the following team members who graduated with the PhD\u2019s this year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sungchan Jeong: Seoul National University. Thesis title \u201cTracking multi-scale vegetation dynamics by combining satellite observations and machine learning\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Theodore Keeping: Reading University. Thesis title \u201c<span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Modelling Wildfire Occurrences and their Present and Future Patterns of Variability over the Contiguous United States&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Yicheng Shen: Reading University. Thesis title \u201cOptimality approaches linking fire-related plant traits and ecosystem responses to climate change\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Ruijie Ding: Imperial College London. Thesis title \u201cPrinciples of carbon allocation in plants and ecosystems\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We have welcomed new PhD team members: Ananda Kurth (Bern), Jisun Kim (previous Masters student,\u00a0 Seoul National University). We have also welcomed seven new post-docs to the project: Yitong Yao, Akash Verma, Lucas Ellison, Mateusz Lisiewski, Timothee Corchia, Ruijie Ding and Regina O&#8217;Kelley.<\/p>\n<p>Wenjia (Shirley) Cai, a post-doc at ICL, attended the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/new-perspective-from-the-space-eebiomass-summer-school-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EEBIOMASS<\/a> Summer School, Jena, Germany (May) to learn from the latest remote sensing techniques for better validation and evaluation for modellers in the LEMONTREE group<\/p>\n<p>Ananda Kurth also undertook a one month <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/secondment-in-south-korea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">secondment at SNU.<\/a> Ananda worked with Youngryel\u2019s group to develop an fPAR and LAI product that excludes anthropogenic influences on vegetation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2741 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/11\/Picture4-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/11\/Picture4-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/11\/Picture4-1024x767.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/11\/Picture4-768x575.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/190\/2025\/11\/Picture4.jpg 1227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Jisun Kim (Youngryel\u2019s lab at SNU) got the opportunity to undertake <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/fieldwork-experience-at-western-australia-by-jisun-kim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fieldwork in Western Australia<\/a> with Deniil Scheifes (Utrecht University) to measure photosynthesis across the Warren River chronosequence to examine how soil nutrient status relates to leaf-level photosynthetic parameters.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Workshops &amp; The title was \u201cEcosystem processing of absorbed solar energy and it\u2019s coupling to carbon fixation: towards a new synthesis.\u201d The workshop brought together experts in remote sensing, ecosystem modelling, field ecology, and plant physiology to push forward our collective efforts to link satellite observations with the fundamental processes that drive plant growth and the carbon cycle.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/imfiredup-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IMFIREDUP<\/a> September 2-25 (middle). The second meeting of the group \u201cImproved modelling of FIRE: Development, understanding and prediction\u201d led by LEMONTREE. The meeting brought together researchers from across the wildfire modelling community for three days of presentations, discussions, and brainstorming sessions. The aim was to share progress, spark new ideas, and push forward collective efforts to better understand and model the complex dynamics of fire. Key challenges identified included the importance of scale, biodiversity, and human activities, alongside new tools such as machine learning and ensembles.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/simpler-smarter-stronger-workshop-on-incorporating-eeo-into-land-surface-models\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Incorporating EEO into LSMs<\/a> in April (right). 18 leading scientists gathered to take on one of the most complex and pressing challenges in Earth system science: how to make Land Surface Models (LSMs) more accurate, simpler and more robust. The unifying thread? Eco-Evolutionary Optimality (EEO) theory. This three-day workshop, hosted by the LEMONTREE project, was an opportunity to share ideas, experiences, and visions for the future of modelling Earth\u2019s land systems.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/annual-lemontree-meeting-in-seoul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual team meeting<\/a> this year at Seoul National University was a real highlight. Over 100 researchers joined the opening symposium, followed by focused team discussions to map out the final stretch of the project. We had a large team presence at <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/lemontree-at-egu-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EGU<\/a> in Vienna with 14 presentations from LEMONTREE (May). Our presence at EGU was marked by a mix of oral and poster presentations across a variety of sessions, covering plant respiration, stomatal regulation, wildfires, optimality in forest dynamics, and much more. Many of our PhD students had their first opportunity to present at a major international conference\u2014an experience that is both challenging and rewarding. In September, Sandy Harrison presented at the annual VESRI Virtual Symposium This week we have a team of 13 LEMONTREE members at <a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/lemontree\/lemontree-at-agu-2025-new-orleans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AGU<\/a> in New Orleans.
