\u00a9 Hybricon<\/p>\n
Madagascar has experienced regular episodes of conflict with various stages since the colonial period. So far, the Malagasy have not been able to explain why the conflict trajectories vary to such a great extent at the national level. This country has been in contact with external actors, their cultures and ideologies, or their modes of governance. These interactions between the local and the international created various situations involving, for example, collaboration, acceptance, rejection, clashes and even high levels of violence. Despite the recent advances in the study of processes of hybridisation involving the formation of “international\/ liberal and local\/ non-liberal institutions, practices and values, very little is understood regarding the way in which these processes affect local conflict trajectories.<\/p>\n
HYBRICON will respond to the following questions:<\/p>\n
This project argues that the variations in the processes of hybridisation at the local level in two Malagasy localities have led to various conflict outcomes shaping the local conflict trajectories.<\/p>\n
HYBRICON will engage in two different types of work: one is conceptual (exploring hybridity and hybridisation) which will require archival research both in Madagascar and in France. And the other is empirical (assessing its impact on conflict trajectories) entailing the generation of new primary and bottom-up data on these processes through the organisation of “narrative workshops” during which local stakeholders, including representatives from the communities, will be invited to tell their own narratives about peace and conflict.<\/p>\n
On the one hand, this project has important implications for theories of hybridisation by proposing a theoretical and conceptual understanding of the international, going beyond the liberal order. On the other hand, the local narratives that it will generate through a methodology called Delphi technique, allowing the collection of narratives through participatory focus groups, will help to understand the conflict dynamics in this country. The research will provide bottom-up-based evidence that will help actors involved in peace processes to shape solutions as they address conflicts, and in the same vein, help them develop better policy processes at different levels. Its originality also lies in the fact that it recognizes the capacity of the local communities to act as agents of change not as mere recipients while giving voice to these local narratives. This is one way of empowering local actors so that they can appropriate local peace processes. Madagascar a connu des \u00e9pisodes r\u00e9guli\u00e8res de conflits \u00e0 diff\u00e9rents stades depuis la p\u00e9riode coloniale. Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, les Malgaches n\u2019ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 en mesure d\u2019expliquer pourquoi les trajectoires du conflit varient autant au niveau national. Ce pays a \u00e9t\u00e9 en contact avec des acteurs ext\u00e9rieurs, leurs cultures et id\u00e9ologies, ou leurs modes de gouvernance. Ces interactions entre le local et l\u2019international ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 diverses situations impliquant des r\u00e9actions telles que la collaboration, l\u2019acceptation, le rejet, des affrontements et m\u00eame des niveaux \u00e9lev\u00e9s de violence. Malgr\u00e9 les progr\u00e8s r\u00e9cents dans l\u2019\u00e9tude des processus d\u2019hybridation impliquant la formation \u00ab d\u2019institutions, de pratiques et de valeurs internationales (lib\u00e9rales\/non lib\u00e9rales) et locales, tr\u00e8s peu de choses sont comprises quant \u00e0 la mani\u00e8re dont ces processus affectent les trajectoires de conflit locaux.<\/p>\n

Ce projet sugg\u00e8re que les variations des processus d\u2019hybridation au niveau local dans deux localit\u00e9s \u00e0 Madagascar (le centre et la p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie ) ont conduit \u00e0 divers impacts fa\u00e7onnant les trajectoires de conflit locaux.<\/p>\n
L\u2019\u00e9quipe d\u2019 HYBRICON s\u2019engagera dans deux types de travaux diff\u00e9rents : l\u2019un est conceptuel (exploration de l\u2019hybridit\u00e9 et de l\u2019hybridation) qui n\u00e9cessitera des recherches de documents d\u2019archives. D\u2019une part, ce projet a des implications importantes pour les th\u00e9ories de l\u2019hybridation en proposant une compr\u00e9hension th\u00e9orique et conceptuelle de l\u2019international allant au-del\u00e0 de l\u2019ordre lib\u00e9ral. D\u2019autre part, les r\u00e9cits locaux qu\u2019il g\u00e9n\u00e9rera gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une m\u00e9thodologie appel\u00e9e technique Delphi, permettant la collecte de r\u00e9cits par le biais de groupes de discussions participatives, aideront \u00e0 comprendre la dynamique des conflits dans ce pays. C\u2019est un moyen d\u2019autonomiser les acteurs locaux afin qu\u2019ils puissent s\u2019approprier les processus de paix locaux.
