The Mathematical Biology Group at Reading was established in 2010. Our mathematical expertise covers continuum modelling, nonlinear ordinary and partial differential equations, agent based modelling, inverse methods, multiscale modelling, model reduction, model parameterisation and asymptotic methods.
Our research work is focused in the areas of Systems Biology, Medicine, Neuroscience and Pharmacology & Toxicology and Food, Supply Chains & the Environment.
We collaborate with leading academic centres and industry with foci on biology, biomedicine, food, pharmacology and supply chains as well as mathematical centres and departments around the UK and internationally. Our work is/has been funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), British Heart Foundation (BHF), Engineering and Physical Research Council (EPSRC), Innovate UK, Medical Research Council (MRC), Nuffield Foundation, UKRI cross council initiatives, the University of Reading and industry.
Members of the Group lead the UK Quantitative Systems Pharmacology Network, having previously led on the UK Mathematics in Medicine Study Group (2008-2012) series.
Our core teaching includes a third/fourth year module in Mathematical Biology in Mathematics and Statistics and Mathematics and Statistics for the BSc Pharmacology at Reading. Members of the group have previously delivered a 3rd year Systems Biology module for the Biological Sciences.
