The site lies close to a perennial spring and comprises extensive Early Neolithic occupation and later Neo-Assyrian and Sasanian levels, which form much of the 7.5m high central mound.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<section id=\"h.p_VKrmzfzVJR2g\" class=\"yaqOZd lQAHbd\">\n<div class=\"yaqOZd IFuOkc\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-293 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/BEST\/Survey-d-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/BEST\/Survey-d-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/BEST\/Survey-d-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/BEST\/Survey-d-1024x685.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/>Excavations have been conducted at Bestansur since 2012 to investigate the nature and extent of the Early Neolithic occupation and their economy and society. Surface walking and artefact collection revealed an extensive spread of Neolithic materials, including chert and obsidian tools, in the fields on the west, south and east sides of the mound. Test trenches established that intact Early Neolithic deposits are preserved across an area at least 100m east-west and 50m north-south.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"h.p_wn4Pl2aaQyFr\" class=\"yaqOZd WxWicb lQAHbd\"><\/section>\n<section id=\"h.p_ZwtlkbpnT2YI\" class=\"yaqOZd lQAHbd\">\n<div class=\"mYVXT\">\n<div class=\"LS81yb VICjCf\">\n<div class=\"hJDwNd-AhqUyc-uQSCkd purZT-AhqUyc-II5mzb pSzOP-AhqUyc-qWD73c JNdkSc\">\n<div class=\"oKdM2c\">\n<div id=\"h.p_LHgjnNdNL6-l\" class=\"hJDwNd-AhqUyc-uQSCkd jXK9ad D2fZ2 OjCsFc wHaque GNzUNc\">\n<div class=\"jXK9ad-SmKAyb jXK9ad-SmKAyb-c4YZDc\">\n<div class=\"tyJCtd mGzaTb baZpAe\">\n<p id=\"h.p_yLwxltaTL6-n\" class=\"zfr3Q\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-296 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/BEST\/T14-300x139.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"354\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/BEST\/T14-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/BEST\/T14.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 354px) 100vw, 354px\" \/>A gradiometry survey revealed a wide range of features including a large water channel and extensive stone-walled buildings, probably Neo-Assyrian in date.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Colleagues from the <\/span><a style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" href=\"https:\/\/cnrs.ubc.ca\/people\/lisa-cooper\/\">University of British Columbia<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"> have conducted excavations to locate the later structures across the site. These investigations found substantial stone architecture enclosing spaces containing in situ ceramics in abundance, including large storage jars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Through boreholes and column-sampling taken by Rob Batchelor (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.reading.ac.uk\/quest\/\">QUEST<\/a>), investigations into the early site formation processes and environmental history of Bestansur are underway at the University of Reading. A public outreach programme was developed by Rhi Smith (<a href=\"https:\/\/merl.reading.ac.uk\/\">MERL<\/a>), engaging local teachers with the history and significance of the site, as well as the archaeological and scientific processes employed by the team.\u00a0<span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">Whilst in the field, we have continued a programme of outreach activities, including engagement with many media and TV companies, including\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"dhtgD\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http%3A%2F%2Frudaw.net%2Fenglish%2Fkurdistan%2F030420162&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNEdbf0MrtTl5dPrYV22k0zubu1YUw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rudaw TV<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"h.p_EAdeb_NnJV-D\" class=\"yaqOZd lQAHbd\">\n<div class=\"mYVXT\">\n<div class=\"LS81yb VICjCf\">\n<div class=\"hJDwNd-AhqUyc-wNfPc purZT-AhqUyc-II5mzb pSzOP-AhqUyc-wNfPc JNdkSc yYI8W \">\n<div class=\"oKdM2c\">\n<div id=\"h.p_YOlKopHlJiLu\" class=\"hJDwNd-AhqUyc-wNfPc pSzOP-AhqUyc-wNfPc jXK9ad D2fZ2 wHaque GNzUNc\">\n<div class=\"jXK9ad-SmKAyb jXK9ad-SmKAyb-c4YZDc\">\n<div class=\"tyJCtd mGzaTb baZpAe\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-297 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_2415-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_2415-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_2415.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/>The expansion of key trenches around the mound have revealed the substantial architecture of the Neolithic settlement. <span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">The excavations revealed a wide range of activities in exterior areas around the edge of mound and finely stratified occupation.\u00a0<\/span>To the west of the mound, excavations in Trench 7\u00a0revealed a pis\u00e9 building, including a room containing a substantial quantity of ground-stone tools. Outside the building, we found a double human burial, with an adult male and adult female buried head to toe in tightly constricted positions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"h.p_NCaAx8YxMLN4\" class=\"yaqOZd lQAHbd\">\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"yaqOZd IFuOkc\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-298 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/T12-13-Gen-photo-300x144.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"356\" height=\"171\" https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/T12-13-Gen-photo-1024x492.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 356px) 100vw, 356px\" \/>A 15m section across the northern edge of the existing mound (Trench 12) and a step trench into the fields below (Trench 13) have yielded glimpses into the core of the Neolithic settlement, with fine plaster surfaces, layers of dung and ochre, comparable with Neolithic sites across the region, such as \u00c7atalh\u00f6y\u00fck.The fine stratigraphy of these surfaces in Trenches 12 and 13 contained tiny beads, fish and small mammal bones<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">, a fragment of a rare flanged alabaster bracelet, small clay objects and two deposits of pierced fishing net sinkers.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"h.p_NNqj0M50Qn_N\" class=\"yaqOZd WxWicb lQAHbd\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-303 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DJI_0012-300x55.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"338\" height=\"62\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DJI_0012-300x55.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DJI_0012-768x141.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DJI_0012.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/span><\/section>\n<section><\/section>\n<section class=\"yaqOZd WxWicb lQAHbd\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\">On the eastern slope of the mound, excavations in Trench 10 have located two distinct phases of a large porticoed building: the earlier walls in mud-brick (Building 8), with multiple applications of coloured plaster, and the latter in pis\u00e9 with restricted plaster use (Building 5) radiocarbon dated to c. 7700 BC.\u00a0<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-299 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_7801-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_7801-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_7801.jpg 448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/>Building 5 was found to contain defined spaces, including a large oven with multiple layers of ash containing a large ground stone and a stone macehead.\u00a0Lining the walls of the uppermost phase of Building 5\u2019s portico, a strikingly engraved stone bears an elaborate network of lines and dots scored deeply into the surface.\u00a0 The human remains of more than 72 individuals were deposited below the floor of one room, interspersed with stone and shell beads.\u00a0This number of individuals is higher than that found in many houses from other Neolithic sites of the Middle East, such as Tell Halula in Syria, where 5-15 individuals were buried within single buildings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-300 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_0250-300x79.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"79\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_0250-300x79.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_0250-768x202.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_0250-1024x270.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The high number within Building 5 at Bestansur is larger than expected for a single household and suggests that there were extensive and long-lived relations between communities of individuals.\u00a0We are very grateful to the Sulaimaniyah Antiquities Directorate for permission to export human bones and teeth for analysis, including diet, health and mobility. We are carrying out a full programme of analysis of this very special assemblage of human remains from the Early Neolithic period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-301 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/Sp50-300x111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/Sp50-300x111.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/Sp50.jpg 447w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/>Contemporary buildings have been identified around Building 5. Each of the buildings located in Trench 10 have distinctive materials in their construction, including the colour of mudbrick, the application of plasters and the presence of matting.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.08px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-302 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_0187-300x109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"128\" srcset=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_0187-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_0187-768x279.jpg 768w, https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/mentica\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/Unorganized\/DSC_0187-1024x373.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/>External areas surrounding the buildings provide evidence for activities conducted in these spaces.
