{"id":1855,"date":"2023-11-09T11:52:09","date_gmt":"2023-11-09T11:52:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/?page_id=1855"},"modified":"2023-11-29T14:14:47","modified_gmt":"2023-11-29T14:14:47","slug":"darc-blog-instructions-to-authors","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/other\/internal-documents\/darc-blog-instructions-to-authors\/","title":{"rendered":"DARC blog instructions to authors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/other\/internal-documents\/darc-blog-instructions-to-authors\/blog-rota\/\"><em>Blog rota<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1856 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2023\/11\/BlogIcon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"262\" \/><\/strong><strong>Aim<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>To provide a space for the members of DARC to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>communicate and advertise their research,<\/li>\n<li>engage with scientists and non-scientists to increase awareness of data assimilation,<\/li>\n<li>inspire people to enter a career in data assimilation and encourage more diversity in a maths-heavy discipline,<\/li>\n<li>highlight some of the scientific challenges that data assimilation needs to address,<\/li>\n<li>celebrate achievements of DARC members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Scope<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p>The types of blogs include but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>summary of research,<\/li>\n<li>tutorial on concepts related to data assimilation,<\/li>\n<li>demonstration of the connection of DA to other research areas. This could be tied into international days e.g. World Meteorological Day, International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction\u2026,<\/li>\n<li>summary of conferences, workshops, summer schools etc. attended,<\/li>\n<li>personal perspectives on the subject area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Frequency<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p>every 2-4 weeks<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Editor<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p>Quarterly rotation so volunteers needed!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Length<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p>Roughly 300-800 words including 1-2 figures with captions and alt-text. If it is too long you will likely be asked to make significant cuts.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Style<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p>The content should be understandable to anyone with a general interest in science and mathematics. The style should be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Formal but non-technical, use short sentences and paragraphs and avoid jargon.<\/li>\n<li>Entertaining and engaging, try to provide a clear narrative.<\/li>\n<li>Should not contain content that we do not feel is representative of DARC.<\/li>\n<li>Active voice and the use of subheadings andtransition words is encouraged<\/li>\n<li>A summary of research blog could follow the structure of\n<ul>\n<li>\u2018What problem are you studying?\u2019 (summarise the question addressed, why it is important, what is already known and what the gap in knowledge is that you tackle),<\/li>\n<li>\u2018What was your approach?\u2019 (emphasise the novelty of your methods and why they are appropriate for the research question),<\/li>\n<li>\u2018What did you learn?\u2019 (Summarise results and include areas where more work needs to be done),<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Who will benefit from your research?\u2019 (Make the connection to other research areas and the ultimate end-users. This could come full circle back to the original problem).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>References<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p>Include references and links for further reading.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Initial submission<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p>Send Word doc including in-line figures with alt text and keywords to the current editor and Alison a.m.fowler@reading.ac.uk, one week before publication.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Review<\/strong>:<\/h4>\n<p>Your blog will be reviewed by the editor and sent back to you to make (usually) minor corrections.
