{"id":2,"date":"2017-09-15T19:15:49","date_gmt":"2017-09-15T18:15:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2023-11-15T16:35:55","modified_gmt":"2023-11-15T16:35:55","slug":"aboutus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/aboutus\/","title":{"rendered":"About us"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A brief history of DARC<\/h2>\n<p>DARC was founded as a NERC Centre of Excellence in the early 2000s under the directorship of Prof. Alan O&#8217;Neill.\u00a0 It was run from the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading in the UK.\u00a0 The centre included personnel from the Departments of Meteorology and Mathematics, and the ESSC at Reading, and from RAL, BADC, and the Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, Surrey, and Leeds.\u00a0 Its main remit was to use data assimilation to exploit measurements of the Earth from the new EnviSat research satellite launched in 2002.\u00a0 Some preliminary work on this was done previously by the EU-funded research project DARE.\u00a0 The work of DARC built on the Met Office&#8217;s assimilation and forecasting system, which included physics and chemistry processes in the Earth&#8217;s stratosphere.\u00a0 The centre was also active in developing new and improved data assimilation and satellite retrieval techniques.\u00a0 Previous centre directors (in chronological order) were Prof. Alan O&#8217;Neill, Prof. Martin Ehrendorfer, Prof. Peter Jan van Leeuven, and Prof. Alberto Carrassi.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nerc.ukri.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NERC<\/a>: Natural Environment Research Council<br \/>\nESSC: Environmental System Science Centre<sup>1<\/sup><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/stfc.ukri.org\/about-us\/where-we-work\/rutherford-appleton-laboratory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RAL<\/a>: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceda.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BADC<\/a>: British Atmospheric Data Centre<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ugamp.nerc.ac.uk\/hot\/brugge\/dare.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DARE<\/a>: Data Assimilation in Readiness for EnviSat<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Today<\/h2>\n<p>Today DARC is an active research group in the School of Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences at the University of Reading.\u00a0 It is comprised of many dozen research scientists.\u00a0 The group is lead jointly by Prof. Sarah Dance and Prof. Amos Lawless.\u00a0 It is not funded directly, although many of our research projects are funded by NERC, EPSRC, and the EU.<\/p>\n<h2>Our identity over the years<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-269\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/05\/OrigDARClogo.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"77\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-257\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/darc.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"59\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-260\" src=\"https:\/\/research.reading.ac.uk\/met-darc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2018\/05\/DARClogo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"96\" height=\"71\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup> ESSC is now part of the Dept. of Meteorology, Univ. of Reading.<br \/>\n<sup>2<\/sup> Do not confuse with an earlier project that also have the acronym DARE (Data Assimilation in Readiness for EnviSat).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DARC is an active research group in the School of Mathematical, Physical and Computational Sciences at the University of Reading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":1,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"__cvm_playback_settings":[],"__cvm_video_id":"","footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"class_list":["post-2","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.8.1 -
